The Source of Motivation

As we move into December, my mind tends to get distracted easily.  Even more so this year, since we are leaving early tomorrow for a little anniversary jaunt!  It has been planned for almost a year and I am SO excited!

Along with that, comes planning for Christmas and a new session of Daniel Plan in January.  So, it is easy to get distracted and when I get distracted I have to be very careful.  My motivation remains strong, but my focus can waver easily.  My journey to a healthy body continues.  My motivation will continue to come from my Lord and as long as it does, I will succeed in His time.

There is no magic pill.  No quick fix.  What is your motivation?  What is your goal?  If you want that quick fix and you aren’t truly motivated, it will be like every other fad you have tried.  If you really want to be healthier and feel better, this is the place for you.

We are about to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on this earth.  What a precious gift!  As we move into the season, remember what we are celebrating.  Not just what gifts we can give or receive, but the REAL gift, already given to us.  The only thing that really matters.

 Pray Unceasingly!

In His light,

Lois

The Source of Motivation

The Daniel Plan

My counsel is this, live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness.  —Galatians 5:16 MSG

Did you know that God gives you the motivation to do what he wants you to do? And that includes getting physically healthy.  He gives you not just the power to do it, but also the desire to do it. The motivation to do God’s will actually come from God himself.

So if you don’t already desire to get physically healthy so much that you’re willing to schedule movement into your calendar or take healthy steps with your eating, ask God to give you that desire.

If you aren’t motivated to get enough rest or take time alone with God each day, ask him for the motivation. Tell him, “Lord, I don’t want to make these healthy changes, but I want to want to make them. It’s been tough trying to shift my mindset, but I desire to do that. Please fill me with your Holy Spirit, so that I love what you promise and desire what you command.” He longs to answer that prayer.

Food for Thought:  God is eager to give you the motivation to make healthy changes you desire.

The Gift of Gratitude

Happy week after Thanksgiving!  This week’s post is about gratitude, but hopefully, that didn’t end for us last Thursday.

I hope you all had a wonderful day of Thanks.  We spent it with family and friends and I know our church had a good turnout for the annual Thanksgiving dinner.  They served approximately 150 meals!  One of our young ladies who went on the meal delivery detail said that a woman broke down in tears when they gave her a meal.  She was so moved that they did that.

We have so much to be thankful for, but many times, take it for granted.  As we move from one holiday to the next, never forget what we have to be grateful for.  Give thanks, not just at Thanksgiving, but every day!

The Gift of Gratitude

The Daniel Plan

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. —1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Is it truly possible to give thanks in all circumstances? Yes. There might be aspects of the circumstance that God doesn’t want—troubles caused by sin or the brokenness of a fallen world. But there are bound to be elements of the circumstance you can be thankful for.

Thank God that he is with you.

Thank him for how he can form your heart as you persevere.

Thank him for helping you respond with love, faith, and hope.

Thank him for the other people who are standing with you.

Thank him for what he might be doing in their lives because of you that you aren’t aware of.

Once you get started, you can probably think of many more reasons to thank him. Write down these things instead of just thinking of them. Writing your gratitude helps to solidify it in your mind so that it affects your mood and your choices.

Even better: tell someone else you are grateful for him or her for something specific. Doing that will spread the gratitude around.

Food for Thought: Giving thanks in all circumstances will transform the way you experience your life and see the goodness of God.

15 Ideas to Survive the Holidays While Feeling Great!

It’s official!  The holiday season has begun.  Thanksgiving is this week!

You really don’t have to deprive yourself to eat healthily.  If you just simply cannot pass up that luscious pie, take a small wedge instead of a quarter of the pie.  Take a couple of tablespoons of that favorite comfort food that you ALWAYS have.  Then indulge in the vegetables and goodies that give back to you, instead of robbing you of your energy and your health.  I am going to include a recipe at the end that is not only delicious, but an absolute burst of goodness for you.  It is also very SIMPLE!  I love simple!

Turkey is healthy!  Unfortunately, many things that go with it aren’t.  If you are cooking, you can make it easy.  Plenty of vegetables and fruits go a long way with that gobbler!  Roasted vegetables are one of my favorites.  Just dice all kinds of vegetables, pick your favorites  (I love zucchini, yellow squash, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, tomatoes and just about anything else you like), drizzle with some olive oil and roast!  I also like a sprinkle of garlic.  There is an abundance of salads you can make and have you ever tried simply slicing sweet potatoes, add a touch of coarse ground Himalayan pink salt and some real butter and bake it.  It’s simple, healthy and very good!  All REAL, WHOLE food and no chemicals and preservatives!

Christmas will be here before we know it too.  Think beautiful red and green fruits and vegetables, whole grains and whatever favorite protein that you want to use.

If you are going somewhere else, eat an apple right before you go.  If you are going to someone else’s house, take something healthy to share and maybe some healthy nuts to snack on later.  This will allow you to eat lighter if there is nothing healthy, and you won’t be hungry.

In case you think I’ve forgotten it’s the holidays, keep in mind that if you eat lighter and healthier earlier, if you REALLY want to indulge in something later, just watch your portion size and never make yourself miserable or guilty.

 Happy Thanksgiving!

Pray Unceasingly!

 In His light,

Lois

15 Ideas to Survive the Holidays While Feeling Great!

Mark Hyman, MD

It’s holiday time!  This is when we are all tempted (even me) to indulge and eat too many things that taste good but make us feel bad.  Then, of course, we promise ourselves to go into food rehab right after the holidays.  But what if you could enjoy the holidays, have amazing food and not be smothered in mounds of sweets and cakes and heavy foods that give you that momentary pleasure that you immediately regret.

Remember that commercial for antacids, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing”?  Holidays are a festive, joyful time to celebrate with family and friends. And you can avoid turning those social functions into sugary, processed food celebrations that do nothing good for your health or waistline and ultimately, can contribute to diabesity.

Especially during the holidays, you’ll likely find yourself somewhere where you have no control over what is served — a party, an event or a friend’s house. But that doesn’t mean you need to lose control and devour whatever sugary concoction your host has made.

These 15 strategies can become incredibly helpful for your next dinner party or another holiday social gathering:

Make special requests. Tell your host about any food sensitivities you might have. Most will be more than happy to accommodate your request.

Don’t skip meals on the big party day. Instead, eat early and eat often. Keep the fire of your metabolism burning all day, rather than slowing it down during periods of “mini-starvation.” Always have breakfast, eat every 3 to 4 hours, and try to schedule meals at the same time every day. Your metabolism will work faster and more efficiently. You will lose weight, have more energy and feel better.

Eat before you go. I will often eat before I go to an event. I am happier, have more fun, and can enjoy talking and interacting if I don’t have to focus on eating.

Load up on real foods first. Stick with whole fruits, vegetables, non-gluten grains, healthy fats and wild-caught fish or other animal protein. These foods signal your brain to stop eating and you’re less likely to reach for sugary processed foods and dessert.

Watch out for sugar pushers. Every family has one of these. They give you a guilt trip about not trying their special pie, persuading you to “live a little.” If you must sample their creation, having a few bites will usually appease them. Just be careful that a few bites don’t become two pieces.

Make family and friends, not food, your focus. The holidays are about giving and celebrating with those we love most. Food usually becomes the center of attention during these social situations. Remember to shift your focus on what really matters rather than making a beeline for the buffet.

Bring an emergency pack. If you are not sure what the food choices will be, then be prepared. Having your emergency life pack is a great backup. You can always have something before you go in and after you leave if you are still hungry. Over time you will find your favorite version of the life pack, but here’s an example of what you could include:

A small bag of raw almonds, walnuts or pecans

A small bag of cut carrots or cucumbers

A small container of hummus (try Wild Garden single-serve packets)

A can of wild salmon or sardines

A container of chickpeas with olive oil, lemon, salt, and pepper

 A healthy whole-food protein bar

Have a potluck get-together. You can do this at your office. Have coworkers share the responsibility of making lunch for the group once a week or every two weeks. Or create a holiday dinner and request everyone brings one dish. Coordinate those dishes ahead of time so you know everyone brings something different and that every dish will be healthy.

Watch your alcohol. Among its problems, alcohol depletes mood-boosting B vitamins, is a brain toxin and slows down brain metabolism. It also makes you uninhibited around food.  If you drink at parties, stick with a dry wine or tequila. Whatever you do, avoid eggnog and other sugary alcoholic drinks. Also remember to stay hydrated during the event.

Be aware of food sensitivities. Dairy and gluten are the most common triggers of food allergies, and they appear often during the holidays. For patients who have trouble losing weight, I often recommend a short elimination, like the 10 Day Detox in The Daniel Plan book. Both dairy and gluten are linked to insulin resistance and, therefore, weight gain. This one move may be the single most important thing you can do to lose weight.

Just relax and eat. Eat things that nourish you such as meat, fish or chicken. Ask for extra vegetables or a second salad. Or just do your best and relax and have fun – you can always get back to your routine in the morning.

Don’t skimp on sleep. Sleep often takes a backseat during holiday festivities, but getting sufficient amounts becomes even more important among what can sometimes become stressful, frenzied days. Take a little “holiday” in the two hours before bed. Creating a sleep ritual, a special set of little things you do before bed to help ready your system physically and psychologically for sleep, can guide your body into a deep healing sleep.

Workout before you go. Exercise is the only thing besides eating breakfast that has been correlated with long-term weight loss.   You don’t have to exercise to exercise. Instead of going to the gym, try going for a brisk walk, ice skating, playing with your kids or going for a hike.

Bring your supplements. Just because you eat a big dinner doesn’t mean you should neglect crucial nutrients you might not be getting in your food. For almost everyone, I recommend a multivitamin and mineral supplement; calcium and magnesium with vitamin D; and omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil) as foundation nutrients.

Journal your experience. One study published in Kaiser Permanente Research found people who recorded what they ate lost twice the amount of weight as those who didn’t journal. Writing down everything – including what you eat, your exercise and any emotional or psychological experiences that might become relevant – can help you pinpoint what may have gotten you off track.

That period between Thanksgiving and the New Year can also be a very stressful time. We often soothe our stress with endless desserts and other processed, sugary foods that are everywhere during the holiday season. It’s important to focus on strategies to calm the mind. Two of my favorite ways to manage stress involve taking an UltraBath and doing a “Take 5” breathing break. I also encourage you to do yoga, meditation or any other relaxation technique.

Date and Almond Balls

10 ounces of pitted dates

1 T coconut oil

¼ tsp ground cinnamon

1 T desiccated coconut (I use unsweetened coconut flakes)

2 ounces chopped almonds

Almond meal

Put pitted dates in a food processor with the coconut oil, cinnamon and coconut.  Pulse a minute or two to finely chop.  Transfer the mixture to a large bowl, add the chopped almonds and knead into a dough.  If it’s too sticky, rub a little coconut oil onto your hands.  Once kneaded, pinch off a piece about the size of a marshmallow and roll into a ball, then roll it in the almond meal till coated.

These balls can be kept in an airtight container for approximately a month.

Why We Do What We Do

Election – Check!  Thanksgiving and Christmas – Be here before we know it!  New Years – New Start!

On January 5th, we will once again begin The Daniel Plan – 40 Days to a Healthier Life.  Between now and then, we will be touching on how to get prepared.  We will be talking about cleaning out your pantry, healthy shopping and the reason we just go on and on and on.  The class may be 40 days more or less, but this is a lifestyle change.  Not for 40 days or a couple of months, but on and on!  It is when you get all the junk out of your system that you begin to FEEL the change!

If you live the change, you should start seeing noticeable changes.  Better lab reports, less medications needed, improved skin and the MOST noticeable of all, the heart and soul change.  It really isn’t just about us.

TDP is based on five essentials: Faith – Food – Fitness – Focus and Friends.  It’s not just a diet, nor is it just a Bible study.  It’s about focusing on these key essentials and changing your life, one choice at a time.

Take note of the word “choice”.  Like most things in our lives, our choices help determine all that we do and the outcome of those choices.  What we put in our bodies, whether it is through our minds or through our stomachs will affect what comes out of our minds and bodies.  If it is garbage, full of poisons and toxins, then that is what others will see from us.

Our bodies are the temple of God.  What if every time we eat something or do something we do it as in presenting it to God as an offering to Him.  Will He see it as an acceptable offering?  Will it glorify God?

 Pray Unceasingly!

 In His light,

Lois

Why We Do What We Do

The Daniel Plan

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. —1 Corinthians 10:31

It takes energy to forge new habits. Energy comes from motivation. The “why” determines how long you will persevere in pursuing a prize. The reason determines your motivation.

Here are two truths to remember when you feel like giving up: First, remember the reason you’re getting healthy—you’re doing it for the glory of God. He cares about your health because he wants to use your life to change the world.

Second, remember the reward: better physical health, more strength and energy, a sharper mind, deeper friendships, and stronger faith.

Focus on your purpose, not your problems. Obstacles are what you see when you take your eyes off the goal. If you want to accomplish your goals, remember the reason and the reward.

What is a new habit you want to adopt? What is your reason? Your reward?

Food for Thought: Aiming for glorifying God will give you the strength to persevere in your journey toward health.

The Freedom of Self-Control

The Freedom of Self-Control

 Happy October 31st!

Maybe the “spookiest” part of today is the fact that we still have to deal with commercials and pre-election for 8 more days!  The rest is in our prayers and God’s plans.   May God be with us.

There are daily choices in every aspect of our lives.  Some are simple and some require a great deal of thought and prayer.  And sometimes those that you thought were so simple, could have used a bit more thought and prayer.  We have the freedom to makes these choices and that is a privilege that shouldn’t be taken lightly.  There are so many who don’t have that freedom and yet we so often take it for granted.

My wish for each of you this week is that you pray about each choice you make.  Whether it is what you put in your body and mind or what comes out as a result, pray that it will glorify God.  Pray that when we stand before Him, we can do it with our heads held high and know that even the mistakes we have made have been forgiven.  Pray that everyone we meet sees His love in us.

 Pray Unceasingly!

 In His light,

Lois

 The Freedom of Self-Control

The Daniel Plan

The grace of God … teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age. —Titus 2:11-12 NIV

We want to say “No” to unhealthy habits, but sometimes that’s difficult to do in our own strength. At times those habits can seem so deeply rooted that we aren’t able to make those good choices.

What can we do? The Bible urges us to pray for the grace of God, which enables us to say “No” to unhealthy impulses and “Yes” to self-controlled, upright, and godly habits.

It turns out that self-control is true freedom, the freedom to choose what we know is good for us. We gain more self-control as we pray for grace and then act on grace.

The more often we act on grace and choose wisely, the weaker the grip our old habits have on our lives. We may have setbacks along the way, but more and more we’ll be able to choose self-controlled practices.

Food for Thought: Self-control is true freedom, and God’s grace makes it more and more available to us, so that gradually we become fully free to make the choices we know will make us flourish.

Belong Tour Blog

Ok, I seem to be on a roll.  I’m not sure exactly what it is, but there seems to be something on my heart that needs to come out.  Why do I not know exactly what that is?

As some of you know, I went to a women’s conference (Belong Tour) a week or so ago.  It was the first one I had ever been to so I was very impressionable, a sponge just waiting to soak up every tidbit of inspiration they had to offer, and there were many.

Along with singing, Nichole Nordeman spoke several times.  You could tell, you could seriously FEEL the emotion that she was sharing.  At one point, she shared something from one of her songs  “You are not the ashes, you are the flame.”  She said “The only normal is a setting on your dryer.  Your garage is full of boxes.  Until you open those boxes, you won’t have peace.”   I take that to mean You are not your past, what you used to be, you are now and what you allow God to help you be…  Sometimes we have to open the boxes and release the past.  Will you burn for Christ?  Will you be all He created you to be?

Another one that impressed me was from Angela Davis, known in L.A. as the fitness evangelist. (loved this woman!)  “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”   You know, it is really easy to just settle.  Settle for whatever is easy and works.  BUT, is that really what God created you to be?  Whatever is easy, whatever just works?  Really?  Christ lived a relatively short life on this earth and it wasn’t all pretty and comfortable.  His earthly life was a daily challenge, and then He died a horrific death.  And you know, He always knew this is the way it would be.  He even knew how it would end, but WE were worth it.  Yeah, you and I, as unworthy as we are, were worth it.  Sometimes it just overwhelms me and I have to remind myself, I am not the ashes, I am the flame.  Me.  I am not worthy.  I will never be deserving of the sacrifice, but what I am is CHOSEN, APPOINTED and SET APART!   All as a unique, one of a kind individual with a specific purpose and plan that only HE could design.  Just as you are.  Every single time you start to doubt yourself and wonder just what in the world you are doing here, remember that He knew you before you were formed in the womb.  He created you, hair by hair and chromosome by chromosome to be you, here for His plan.

“Sometimes when things are falling apart, they are actually falling into place.”  That’s not an easy one.   When it feels like everything is falling apart, you probably might not want to hear that they are falling into place.  But, what if the falling apart (our plan) is preparing the way for falling into place. (GOD’S plan)   I have always wanted to save God the trouble of having to work too hard in my life so I try to take care of things on my own.  To this day, I haven’t found a single plan of mine that worked nearly as well as His!

We all struggle daily.  We are faced with challenges and personal issues that try to overwhelm us.  There are things that happen that just don’t seem fair.  Hopefully, during these times we will learn to lean on the One who will always be there.   Hopefully, we will be stronger coming out than we were when we went in.

Jeremiah 29:11

A blessed Monday to you all!

Once again, my thoughts for this email did a u-turn and started over.  Once again, I heard something that just stuck in my mind and sat there spinning.

As I was listening to my Daily Audio Bible, Brian Harding was doing a commentary on the passages we had just read in Jeremiah.  Did you know that Jeremiah 29:11 is the most googled scripture in the Bible?  It only makes sense.  It is a verse of comfort and hope.  It is such a soothing, encouraging, scripture.  It is beautiful.

“For I know the plans I have for you” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

So what does this verse say to you?  Like so many places in the Bible, if we take it ONLY word for word and not the total context, the meaning changes.  For example, Ephesians 5:22  “Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.”  And you leave it there.   Never mind about 5:25 and the other surrounding verses!  The context changes.  Back in Jeremiah, you need to begin reading at verse 4 to gain a better perspective.

This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build homes and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce.  Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.  Also seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, for if it prospers, you too will prosper.  Yes, this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Do not let your prophets and diviners among you deceive you.  Do not listen to the dreams you encourage them to have.  They are prophesying lies to you in my name.  I have not sent them.”  declares the Lord.

This is what the Lord says:  “When 70 years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my gracious promise to bring you back to this place.  For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord.  They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.Jeremiah 29:4-11

Brian says: and that’s it, we have literally taken this scripture completely out of context. Context is very important in the Bible. The context is no less affirming and hopeful, but it fills in the story.  Filling in the story is everything to this verse.  That is totally different than the way we most often use this scripture. This scripture is sent to a people who are in exile and are just trying to figure out how they can escape, how it is ever going to turn around.  God is saying to them, ‘chill out,’ ‘settle down,’ ‘settle in.’  ‘Your way forward is going to take a generation and your way forward is bound up in the welfare of the place that you are in exile.  If you feel like you’re in exile right now and you’ve been quoting this scripture, then you know there is more to this story.  We spend so much of our lives just trying to be anywhere but where we are.  In one way or another we’re dissatisfied almost all of the time in some sector of our lives.  Even if we own it, even if we just own it and say, ‘okay, I got myself into this.  I realize I’m reaping what I’ve sowed and I want to get out of this and I’m planting new seeds,’ that is a season.  It takes a whole season for a new crop to rise up. But we are constantly dissatisfied with where we are now.”

The exiled Israelites are in a “season” and God tells them to settle in until this season passes.  They have put themselves here (in exile) and now they need to see it through.

What season is your life in?  Are you dissatisfied with yourself physically or spiritually? Are your health issues determining what your life looks like?  Is your heart broken or your family falling apart?   I think we all struggle with these things in our seasons.  We sometimes sabotage our own efforts and sometimes we have other issues affecting us, but I know this, without a doubt.  God created each one of us with a very distinct plan.  He created us uniquely, like no other.  Sometimes, we may have to weather a season of our lives that we would rather just skip, but remember, God has a plan.

Look at the season our nation is in.  We don’t know how crazy and bizarre the story may get, but we do know how the story ends.  We know that our God wins!  No matter who our president is, God is still our king!

We tend to live restless, dissatisfied lives.  We long for wholeness and make it about our personal comfort.  May we settle in where we are and move on to the adventure that God has planned for us.

Pray Unceasingly!

In His light,

Lois

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday!  It’s GREAT to be back!

Is everyone else feeling as blessed as I am right now?   We have just weathered (pun intended) a massive hurricane that missed us by just a few miles!  It was our first one being here and despite all of our preparations, I was doing some fervent praying too!  There has been so much devastation along the coastline, but compared to places like Haiti, what we received was minimal.  If you are one who asks “why?”, talk to Pastor Tom.

We just returned from an amazing trip to San Antonio where we were able to spend time with a son and our youngest grandson.  As a footnote, I had hoped this grandson, at 13, might be shorter than me for a little longer.  I was wrong!  They have all outgrown me now!  The time with them was precious.

The other reason we were there, and the reason for the timing of this vacation, still brings a tear to my eyes.  Our other grandson, Carson, whom some of you have met at church, graduated Air Force basic training.  This sweet baby boy, (who also outgrew me a few years back) the eighteen years old teenage boy that enthusiastically went on his way two months ago, traveled to adulthood.

The love and joy that I felt seeing the transformation in him dimmed when I looked into the eyes of Carson’s mom and dad.  They saw all the hard work, countless hours of delivering him here and there, hounding him to do homework, keeping him busy and taking him to church culminate in this remarkable, disciplined young man.  He didn’t always like it, but it worked.  They were glowing with love and happiness in his accomplishment!

This is the way life is.  We are works in progress.  We push ourselves and do everything we think is right and then FINALLY we see results.  The results are sometimes different than what we pictured, but may be bigger and better than what we imagined.  I believe God glows with love and happiness at our accomplishments too.  Carson’s dreams have been magnified.  Have yours?  Are your dreams Godly?  Do you have an ultimate goal?  Here’s a big one, have you asked God if your dream is according to His perfect will?

Everything we do, think and want is going to be determined by attitude and relationship with Him.  Make your dream worthy of the work and time He put into creating the very unique you!

If you have a moment this week, I would appreciate your prayer.  I am so blessed that what I previously thought might be a problem with my previous hip replacements wasn’t.  They will do an MRI on Wednesday to check on probable sciatica.  It’s not deadly or anything, but is painful.  They hope it will be as simple as traction to help it.  That is my prayer.

Pray Unceasingly!

5 “Healthy” Habits That Could Actually Be Harming Your Health

Happy Monday!

When I read this article, my first instinct was to say “what’s wrong with this!”.  I’m sure I am guilty of all of them at one time or another.  We have been programmed to believe so many things and they aren’t all good things.

It is entirely possible that a few years down the road, we will be told something different again.  As for me, I look at what has happened to us since the low fat fad hit and I see why we need to balance our diet with healthy, high quality fats.  REAL food fats like avocado, coconut oil, oily fish and so forth.  These not only balance our hormones, they help us feel full and battle a lot of diseases!

When I think about the sun, I have to laugh.  I have gone from rubbing on baby oil and doing my very best to fry myself, (my skin is paying for that many years later) to avoiding the sun entirely.  Today, I try to carefully monitor it, but actively attempt to spend some time in the sun without blocking it.

I have to admit to being a little addicted to salt.  Knowing this about myself, I really try to watch it, but by not eating packaged, processed food, your sodium intake is reduced drastically.  If I add salt, it is almost always sea salt.

My exercise is pretty balanced now.  It is an ongoing process to figure out what I can and can’t do to not hurt myself, but I think I’m getting close.

Sleep is a major problem for me.  I just don’t sleep well.  I have tried all the “remedies” and just struggle through.  I won’t take drugs to accomplish this, so I will just keep trying…

How about you?  What change/s can you make to make your life healthier, happier and just better generally?

 Pray Unceasingly!

 In His light,

Lois

5 “Healthy” Habits That Could Actually Be Harming Your Health

James Colquhoun – Food Matters

Despite your best efforts, sometimes things aren’t always as they seem. We’re busting 5 of the most common “healthy” habits that could actually be doing more harm than good.

 1. You Opt for Low-Fat or Fat-Free

In 2012, a study from Purdue University showed that the low-fat and fat-free salad dressings, in particular, make it more difficult for you to absorb key nutrients in your salad. Carotenoids, which are linked to combating cancer, heart disease, and vision loss, are more readily absorbed from veggies when paired with fat-based dressings.

So while you may think you’re doing the right thing cutting back on the fat content of your meal, in fact, you’re reducing the benefits of eating the salad in the first place! Use a full-fat homemade dressing, or add some avocado, nuts, seeds or oily fish to your salad to boost the nutrient bioavailability naturally.

 2. You Stay Out Of The Sun

As part of your long-term skincare regime, you slather on the sunscreen, put on a hat, and stay in the shade. That’s when you have time to actually get away from your desk job and get outside…. But whilst there is nothing wrong with wanting beautiful, supple skin for as long as possible, totally avoiding sun exposure is actually detrimental to your health.
In fact, without daily sun exposure, your body struggles to produce adequate vitamin D, resulting in a range of deficiency symptoms including depression, gut problems, fatigue, tiredness, muscle, bone and joint pain. Not convinced? Here are 8 more reasons to get sunshine daily!

All you need is 10 minutes a day of sunshine on exposed skin without any sunscreen to kickstart your body’s vitamin D generation.

 3. You Avoid Salt Completely

Consuming salt (sodium chloride) has been demonized as a contributing factor to heart disease for years with its links to increasing our blood pressure. However, studies show that dietary sodium or salt intake does not affect everybody the same way. In fact, for many people, there are no changes in blood pressure after ingestion of varying amounts of sodium. It’s only in those who are salt sensitive!

When you completely avoid salt, you’re actually restricting a food rich in minerals and electrolytes that help replenish your stores and support optimal health. According to health expert Mike Adams, adding a sprinkle of high-quality sea salts such as Himalayan or Celtic sea salt into your dietary routine helps to give your mineral intake a gentle boost with 84 different minerals and trace minerals.

In fact, the majority of sodium in the Western diet comes from processed, packaged foods. So if most of the food you eat is fresh produce and minimally processed, then a sprinkle of quality sea salt is nothing to worry about, in fact, it’s good for you!

 4. Your Exercise Efforts Are Focused On Cardio

Daily walks, a morning run, or an afternoon jog is certainly a great addition to a healthy lifestyle, but when you’re skipping gym sessions or at-home strength training circuits for another run, then your metabolism, muscle structure, and skeleton may be missing out! Plus,  if you’re upping the cardio in an effort to lose weight without doing any resistance training, you’ll still lose weight, but you’ll be losing valuable muscle tissue too! For a lasting change, you have to integrate strength workouts into your routine.

Research demonstrates that resistance exercise training has profound effects on the musculoskeletal system, contributes to the maintenance of functional abilities, and prevents osteoporosis, sarcopenia, lower-back pain, and other disabilities. As well as positively affect risk factors such as insulin resistance, resting metabolic rate, glucose metabolism, blood pressure, body fat, and gastrointestinal transit time, which are associated with diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

To get the benefits? Aim to stay active most days, with at least 2-3 resistance training sessions a week for a well-rounded fitness regime!

 5. You Skip a Sleep-In for The Gym

Yes, you read that right!

Picture this: It’s super early in the morning, and your alarm goes off. Time to hit the gym or make that Pilates class before you race to work. The only problem is, you’re really, really tired! Some might tell you to get up and go no matter what, but in actual fact, on those super sleepy mornings when you have been deprived of sleep, you’re better off hitting snooze!

Sleep plays a major role in your overall physical and emotional health, helping your brain function, reducing your risk of chronic disease, promoting mental well-being, and boosting your immune system. Yet most Americans aren’t getting enough sleep.  Studies also show that sleep loss is associated with increased hunger and appetite, linking a lack of shut-eye with an increased risk of obesity.

So from time to time, when you just can’t face that early morning workout, don’t feel guilty. Enjoy the sleep in knowing you’re doing something great for your body!  We’re not saying to skip exercise altogether though. If the only time you can fit in a sweat session is early in the morning, and each day you’re struggling to decide whether to snooze or workout, then it’s simply time to reassess your bedtime schedule to make sure you’re getting enough of both sleep and exercise!

It’s easy to get caught up with what you feel you ‘should’ be doing, and what others may push or mislead you to do, but in the end it comes down to doing the things that make you feel amazing, deep down to your core. They’re individual, and can be a mix of things from walking to work, enjoying a green smoothie, helping others, reaching new personal bests with your fitness, or cooking delicious, healthy meals for yourself and your family. Those are the health habits that give you long-lasting radiant health and help you find true happiness.

9 Natural Ways to Heal Autoimmune Disease

Many times, people are affected by “invisible illnesses” that though unseen, are very real and very painful.  I really wouldn’t suggest telling someone with fibromyalgia that it’s all in their head.  Tread softly and unless you have “walked a mile in their shoes”, show compassion.

Many diseases are more obvious.  Sometimes, heredity has played a part in it, or maybe social aspects or any number of other factors.  Once again, tread softly and unless you have “walked a mile in their shoes”, show compassion.

As many of you know, I attempt to work from the inside out.  While I may not accomplish my original goal, I have found I always accomplish something!  By working from the inside out, I CAN reduce any toxins in my body and along the way reduce the inflammation and pain issues.  Just the simple act of adding more vegetables and fruit and less refined sugar and artificial ingredients can make a life changing difference in how you feel!

Try just baby steps, if you drink soft drinks, cut them back or preferably cut them out!  One thing at a time, one day at a time.  And always remember… you are not doing it alone.  Depend on our God who created you and who lives within you!  Do you believe?  One day, I WILL be healed!  If not here, then in heaven!

 Pray Unceasingly!

 In His light,

Lois

9 Natural Ways to Heal Autoimmune Disease

Mark Hyman, MD

Autoimmune diseases have become a huge health burden. They’re now estimated to impact over 24 million Americans, or between five to eight percent of the population. In fact, more than 80 diseases have been classified as autoimmune, and the list continues to grow. That includes conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, Celiac disease, and thyroid disease. They often involve hard-to-classify syndromes like inflammation, pain, swelling, and misery.

Autoimmunity occurs when your immune system—your body’s defense against invaders—becomes confused. In other words, your body is fighting something, whether that’s infections, toxins, allergens, or a stress response. But somehow, that immune army can’t distinguish friend from foe. Your own tissue gets caught in friendly crossfire, and your joints, brain, skin, and sometimes your whole body become casualties.

Typically, drugs are used to address autoimmune diseases. In many cases, they are lifesaving and help people get their lives back. Still, they can also come with adverse effects.

I believe there’s a better way to deal with autoimmune conditions. The problem with conventional medicine is we don’t ask one simple questions: Why is the body out of balance and how do we help it regain balance?

Conventional medicine often addresses autoimmune disease with powerful immune-suppressing medication rather than searching for the cause. That’s like taking a lot of aspirin while we stand on a tack. The treatment is not more aspirin or a strong immune suppressant, but removing the tack.

Instead, I look for underlying causes. This approach, called functional medicine, is a fundamentally different way of solving medical problems, one that allows us to decipher the origins of illness and identify the disturbances in biology that lead to symptoms.

I believe that when you identify the underlying sources of inflammation, you can heal the body. These might include stress, hidden infections, food allergies or sensitivities, toxic exposure, genetic predisposition, nutrient deficiencies, and leaky gut.

Finding and eliminating the root cause of autoimmune diseases requires detective work, trial and error, and patience—but the results are worth it.

Here are nine strategies I typically implement with my patients looking to find the root of their problem:

1. Eat a whole food, anti-inflammatory diet

Focus on anti-inflammatory foods like omega-3 wild fish, leafy greens and turmeric, and avoid inflammatory foods, such as sugar and corn oils.

2. Look for hidden infections

These include yeast, viruses, bacteria, and Lyme. A functional-medicine practitioner can help you identify and eliminate these infections.

3. Get tested for celiac disease and hidden food allergies

Your doctor can use a blood test to help diagnose celiac disease, which occurs when your body has an immune reaction to eating gluten.

A functional-medicine practitioner can also look for hidden food allergies, like soy or dairy, with IgG food testing. Alternatively, you might consider doing the 10-Day Daniel Plan Detox which is designed to help you eliminate most food allergens.

4. Get checked for heavy metal toxicity

Mercury and other metals can be a risk factor for autoimmunity.

5. Fix the gut

About 60 to 70 percent of your immune system lies right under the one-cell-layer-thick lining of our gut. If this surface breaks down, your immune system will get activated and start reacting to foods, toxins, and bugs in your gut.

The easiest way to begin healing your gut involves eating a whole food, anti-inflammatory diet and removing gluten and other food sensitivities.

6. Implement supplements

Nutrients like fish oil, vitamin C, vitamin D, and probiotics can help calm your immune response naturally. Also consider anti-inflammatory nutrients like quercetin, grapeseed extract, and rutin.

7. Exercise regularly

Consistent exercise is a natural anti-inflammatory. You don’t necessarily need to go to the gym, run on a treadmill, or pump iron to stay in shape. Just start moving around more, use your body more, and have fun.

8. Practice deep relaxation

Stress worsens your immune response. Calming techniques including deep breathing, and massage can reduce stress and anxiety to promote relaxation.

9. Sleep eight hours every night

Lack of sleep, or poor sleep, can damage your metabolism, cause cravings for sugar and carbs, make us eat more, and drive up our risk of numerous conditions from diabesity to autoimmune disease. Sleeping well is essential for vibrant health and reversing inflammation.
