How to Fix Your Gut Bacteria and Lose Weight

Happy, way too DRY, Monday!

This week and next, we will be going over the subject of gut health.  This is a subject that we don’t normally even think about, much less actually pay attention to.

Our gut bacteria are affected by so many things, including our diets, medications we take, sleep we get and stress levels.  Not that we have any issues with these things!

I first found this out years ago when I got a urinary tract infection.  The doctor, of course, put me on antibiotics.  Within three days, I had a yeast infection.  I found out then that the antibiotics not only destroy the bad bacteria, but the good bacteria also.  This opens the door to all sorts of problems.  I now take a good probiotic along with my other supplements all the time.  I would strongly recommend that, at the very least, if you have to take antibiotics, take a good probiotic during and after.

One recent study suggests sugar can promote the growth of bad bacteria in the gut.  This could lead to irritation in the gut, which could even manifest itself as an autoimmune response (allergies and skin conditions are two milder problems). There’s even recent evidence suggesting depression is actually your body’s response to swelling in the gut.  Artificial sweeteners have the same effect as sugar, plus can actually change the way your body processes sugar. Yes, this could raise blood sugar, leading to a bigger issue like diabetes, weight gain is also an outcome.

If you can’t live without sweets, consider limited amounts of raw honey, pure maple syrup or pure stevia.  Dates can make wonderful desserts too.  Just remember moderation is key and if you can’t do moderation, your best option is to have none.

More next week!

How to Fix Your Gut Bacteria and Lose Weight

Mark Hyman, M.D.

“I read somewhere that a high-fat diet can damage your gut bacteria and promote weight gain,” writes this week’s house call. “Should I be concerned if I’m eating a high-fat diet?”

It is true that what you eat can affect your gut bacteria, for better and for worse, and changes in your gut bacteria or microbiome cause weight gain.  Indeed, some studies demonstrate that high-fat diets can adversely affect your gut flora and promote inflammation and weight gain. However, it’s important to note that the type of fat you eat matters!  Most of these studies are focused on diets that incorporate high levels of inflammatory, refined omega 6 vegetable oils like soybean oil.

Refined omega-6 rich vegetable oils fall into the “bad fats” category and should be avoided. While most of us have been convinced, by the food industry and our government, that vegetable oils are safe and a heart-healthy alternative to saturated fats, we now know differently.

Polyunsaturated fats from soybean, canola, and other seed oils are inflammatory. Avoid them if you want to be healthier. Even if you consume some omega 3 fats while consuming these inflammatory oils, you won’t reap the healthy fat benefits.

For most of human history, we consumed a much higher ratio of omega 3 fats to omega 6 fats. Wild foods like grass-fed beef and wild-caught fish provide a great source of omega 3s, but these foods are not a big part of our modern diet. Unfortunately, the factory-farmed animals that do make up much of our modern diet have almost zero omega 3 fats.
The vast quantities of omega 6 fats in our diet contribute to heart disease, diabesity, and cancer.  Studies also link high omega 6 fat consumption to depression, suicide, and other major health problems due to increased inflammation.

To reverse these and other problems and create optimal health, replace these damaging omega 6 fats with healthy ones – like coconut oil, avocados, grass-fed butter, fish rich in omega 3s, and extra-virgin olive oil.

Interestingly, when we look at studies that use the healthy, anti-inflammatory omega 3 fats, we see just the opposite effect. These healthy fats promote healthier gut bugs, lower inflammation levels, and increased weight loss.

I said it before and I’ll say it again:  the types of fat we eat matters. The wrong fats increase inflammation, promote the growth of bad bugs, and create resistance to weight loss. The right fats decrease inflammation and help with weight loss.

Why Is Gut Health So Important?

Optimal gut health has become a prominent focus in 21st century health. Having too many bad critters hanging out in the gut has been linked to numerous problems – including autism, obesity, diabetes, allergies, autoimmunity, depression, cancer, heart disease, fibromyalgia, eczema, and asthma. The links between chronic illness and an imbalanced microbiome (or gut bacteria) keep growing every day.

Many scientists have begun to refer to the gut as our second brain, an idea that is reflected in amazing books like The Good GutBrainmakerThe Microbiome Solution, and The Gut Balance Revolution.

Having a healthy gut should mean more to you than being annoyed by a little bloating or heartburn. It becomes central to your entire health and connected to everything that happens in your body. That’s why I almost always start treating my patients’ chronic health problems by fixing their guts first.

You can begin to understand the importance of gut health when you consider there are 500 species and three pounds of bacteria in your gut. There are trillions of bacteria in your gut, and they collectively contain at least 100 times as many genes as you do. The bacterial DNA in your gut outnumbers your own DNA by 100 times. You have about 20,000 genes, but there are 2,000,000 (or more) bacterial genes!

Altogether, your gut is a huge chemical factory that helps to digest food, produce vitamins, regulate hormones, excrete toxins, produce healing compounds and keep your gut healthy.
Intestinal health could be defined as the optimal digestion, absorption, and assimilation of food. But that is a big job that depends on many other factors. For example, the bugs in your gut are like a rain forest – a diverse and interdependent ecosystem. They must be in balance for you to be healthy.

Too many of the wrong ones (like parasites, yeasts or bad bacteria) or not enough of the good ones (like Lactobacillus or Bifidobacteria), can lead to serious damage to your health.
Optimal gut balance begins with your diet, which directly affects that balance. You want to eat a diet with lots of fiber, healthy protein, and healthy fats.
Good fats, including omega 3 fats and monounsaturated fats – such as extra-virgin olive oil, avocados or almonds – improve healthy gut flora, while inflammatory fats, like omega 6 vegetable oils, promote growth of bad bugs that cause weight gain and disease.

Even obesity has been linked to changes in our gut ecosystem, resulting from an intake of inflammatory omega 6s and not enough anti-inflammatory omega 3s. Bad bugs produce toxins called lipopolysacchardies (LPS)  that trigger inflammation, insulin resistance or pre-diabetes and therefore, promote weight gain.

Lack of sleep and chronic stress also contribute to gut imbalance, In fact, your gut flora listens to and becomes influenced by your thoughts and feelings.  So be sure to get 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep and remember to practice your favorite stress reduction activities daily.

8 Ways to Optimize Gut Flora

The best way to grow a healthy inner garden and make your gut bugs happy begins with your diet. Here are 8 ways to build healthy gut flora starting with your next forkful:

*Eat whole, unprocessed, unrefined foods. One of the best ways to maintain gut health involves cutting out the sugar and refined carbs and jacking up gut-supporting fiber.

*Make 75 percent of your plate be vegetables and plant-based foods. Your gut bugs really love these high-fiber plant foods.

*Eat good fats and get an oil change. The good fats we mentioned earlier (like omega 3 fats and monounsaturated fats, such as extra-virgin olive oil) will help with decreasing inflammation, giving healthy gut bugs a chance to flourish.

*Supplement smartly. Beyond the numerous benefits (including reducing inflammation), studies find omega 3 fatty acids can support healthy gut flora.  You should definitely supplement with an essential fatty acids formula, if you’re not regularly eating wild-caught fatty fish.  You can find professional-quality formulas in my store. Take a good probiotic supplement. This helps reduce gut inflammation while cultivating health and the growth of good bacteria.

*Add more coconut. Studies demonstrate anti-inflammatory and weight loss benefits from adding Medium Chain Triglyceride or MCT oils. One of my favorite fats, coconut oil and coconut butter, contains these fabulous fat-burning MCTs.

*Remove inflammatory fats. Cut out bad, inflammatory omega 6 rich fats like vegetable oils. Replace these with healthier oils like extra-virgin olive oil and coconut oil.

*Add fiber-rich foods. Nuts, seeds, and a special fiber called glucomannan provide prebiotics and feed our healthy bacteria.

*Add fermented foods. Sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh, and miso contain good amounts of probiotics so your healthy gut bugs can be fruitful and multiply.

The above recommendations are not miracle cures.  They are the actions that lead to normalized gut function and flora through improved diet, increased fiber intake, daily probiotic supplementation, the use of nutrients that repair the gut lining, and the reduction of bad bugs in the gut with herbs or medication.

Yes, inflammatory fats will definitely damage your gut bacteria. But the right fats, including omega 3’s and extra-virgin olive oil combined with a whole, real food diet can actually repair your gut and even increase good bacteria.

Step By Step

In our daily lives, we are constantly faced with projects, tasks, or personal goals.  Sometimes, they will be small and easily attainable.  More often, they are large and literally seem impossible!

If you look at the project as a whole, it probably seems overwhelming.  How on earth can a mere human do all of that?  The truth is, if you look at it alone and as a total project, you probably can’t.

But… if you take that very same project and break it down into steps, it suddenly becomes doable!  If you are entertaining a large number of people for dinner, do you just walk into the kitchen and make it magically happen?  It doesn’t work that way for me.  I first plan a guest list.  I then extend invitations.  Next, I will probably plan a menu, go shopping, prep ahead and then finally, prepare the meal and enjoy our guests.

The Daniel Plan is much the same.  If you look at it as a whole, you can become overwhelmed and give up before you ever start.  BUT, if you break it down by steps, it becomes doable.  You can increase your FAITH by spending more time in the Word and communicating with our Lord, Jesus Christ.  We can increase our FOCUS by deciding what we want to achieve, then take enough time to make a plan and stick to it.  We can enlist a FRIEND or few to encourage you, to hold you accountable and to love you through it.  We can choose to plan our FOOD to nourish our bodies and not our emotions.  We can also learn to adapt a FITNESS plan which will strengthen our bodies and our minds in all we do.

That’s what we are about.  Step by step we move forward, forging a rounded out lifestyle that can change our lives and build relationships that will last forever.

Step By Step

The Daniel Plan

In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. —Proverbs 3:6

Growth happens through a steady stream of little choices. If you want to eat in a better way, if you want to take care of your body and exercise more, it takes a series of small choices that add up to big results. You make small choices at every meal or every time you lace up your sneakers.

The same thing is true with your soul. Spiritual health is built up day after day, experience after experience. That’s why the Bible so often uses the metaphor of a path to follow step by step.

The beauty of adding food to your life that heals, nourishes, and satisfies you deeply is that bite by bite it will shift your body and mind into a state where you naturally crave what makes you thrive and feel good. The same is true in the spiritual realm: small dedicated choices will gradually shift your soul to crave the presence of God, which makes you thrive.

Food for Thought: Small choices add up to transformation and, bite by bite and step by step.

A New Life

“It is finished”

Is it?  Is it really?  Our Savior, Jesus Christ, fulfilled what He came to this earth for.  He made the ultimate sacrifice and died a horrific death because He loved us.  Not just the disciples, or even all the people that He met and dealt with in every capacity then, but us.  Thousands of years later.  His sacrifice was for all of mankind.

That brings me back to the question, is it finished?  If He made that kind of sacrifice for us, is that it?

Disclaimer:  This is the opinion of me and me only.  I have no theological background for this opinion, other than my heart.

I feel that even though Jesus’ earthly mission was finished, ours just began.   Our mission is to spread the word of God and be an example of His unconditional love.   And did you know that unconditional means that we don’t get to choose according to race, creed or the paycheck we bring in.  It means that we Love your neighbor as yourself.”  Mark 12:31 excerpt.

Sometimes, I fail at this.  Sometimes, I make judgements that I shouldn’t make. Judgements that I have no right whatsoever to make.  When I do this, all I can do is ask for forgiveness, once again, and try to do better.

So, can you shed the old habits and move on to your new life?  Can you rest in the arms of the One who made you anew?

Father I thank you.  Thank you for the supreme sacrifice you made and the unconditional love you give me, no matter how little I deserve it. Help me follow in the path You have planned for me and not the erratic trail I sometimes travel down.  Help me to love as unconditionally as You would have me love, the way you love me.

 Pray unceasingly!

Lois

A New Life

The Daniel Plan

“If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”  – 2 Corinthians 5:17

How great is a life in Christ! Our old life has passed away and a new life has begun. We’re free of regrets, so we can move forward from the past into a new future that God has waiting for us. We need to reframe our thoughts around this idea of our new identity in Christ, that we are a new person.

Do you experience yourself as a new person, or do old habits cling to you?

Let the past go. Your new life has begun.

In 1 Thessalonians 1:4, God says you are his chosen one, dearly loved.

Do you live like a chosen and dearly loved person? Does that fill your mind so that it affects your emotions and choices? If not, meditate on 1 Thessalonians 1:4. Let it sink into your mind right now.

Food for Thought: You are a new person. You belong to Christ; he chose you and dearly loves you.

Come As You Are This Easter

I remember when every Easter, my mom would try to make or get us a new Easter outfit.  Something pretty and flowery and spring like.  Easter bonnets came out and Easter Sunday was like a springtime parade.  We presented ourselves to God in our very best.  I don’t think there was anything wrong with this, but did we impress God?  I don’t much think so.

I think God is much more impressed with what is underneath all the flowers and frills.  How impressive is that beautiful new outfit, if what is underneath, deep in the confines of your heart and soul, is dirty and ugly?

Maybe we should work on our Easter “outfit” all year long.  Working each and every day to clean out a little more of the gunk.  Scraping out a lifetime of buildup around our hearts in order for the Holy Spirit to come and fill it.

What?  You don’t think you can do that?  You can’t be good enough to present yourself before our King?  Well, guess what.  The cross took care of that.  We can come to him just as we are.  Gunk and all, and just hand it over to Him.

 “Worthy Is The Lamb”
Thank you for the cross Lord                                                                          Worthy is the Lamb
Thank you for the price You paid                                                                   Seated on the throne
Bearing all my sin and shame                                                                         Crown You now with many crowns
In love You came                                                                                               You reign victorious
And gave amazing grace                                                                                  High and lifted up
Jesus Son of God
Thank you for this love Lord                                                                           The Darling of Heaven crucified
Thank you for the nail pierced hands                                                            Worthy is the Lamb
Washed me in Your cleansing flow                                                                Worthy is the Lamb
Now all I know
Your forgiveness and embrace

Come As You Are This Easter
By Rick Warren

“He will send down help from heaven to save me because of his love” (Psalm 57:3a TLB).

There’s a myth that says you’ve got to clean up your act before you can come to God: “I’ve got to get it all together. There are a few things I’ve got to get right in my life first, and then I’ll come to God.”

It’s like brushing your teeth before going to the dentist to have your teeth cleaned or washing the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher or picking up the house before the maid gets there! Why do we do this?

The truth is, God doesn’t expect us to clean up our act before we approach him. The death and Resurrection of Jesus is God’s statement on that. Jesus spread out his arms and said, “I love you this much. Now, just come as you are.”

In Psalm 57:3, the Bible says, “He will send down help from heaven to save me because of his love” (TLB). That’s what Jesus did on Easter. And that’s why we can bring our messes and failures to God.

There are people you know who think God will never love them because they’ve made such a mess of their lives. But you know God wants them to come as they are. Help them hear the Good News from Jesus. Invite them to come to church with you this Easter. It’s such a simple thing to do, but it can make a difference that will last for eternity.

God Chose You

I have so many questions that I’m pretty sure will never be answered on this earth.  So many “whys”.  A whole lot of “why nots” too.  So many things I would like to understand, but never will.

When it comes right down to it though, none of that matters.  I know what I really need to know and the main thing I know is that God loves me.  No matter how insignificant I feel sometimes, I am significant to Him.  He CHOSE me.  He knew me long before I was formed.

Do you want to know something else I know?  He loves you too.  He CHOSE you too.  If we are living in His will, we are exactly what and where He wants us to be.  If we are not living in His will, we are still His CHOSEN, unconditionally loved children and He is just waiting for us.  What a wonderful feeling!

 What a wonderful Savior!

 God Chose You

The Daniel Plan

Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. —Ephesians 1:4 NLT

By faith in Christ you now live at peace with God (Romans 5:1). In fact, God says he chose you from the very start. You are part of his family, and he accepts you completely. In his eyes, you are holy and without fault.

God chose you before he made the oceans. Before he made the solar system, before the sun burst into existence. Before he spread the galaxies of stars across the universe. Before all that he decided, “I’m going to choose to love you.”

If God put so much into creating you to be you, why would you want to be anyone else?

It’s so important to be secure in your identity as one of God’s very own. In order to move forward and make all the changes you desire on The Daniel Plan, you need to know at a profound level how much God loves you.

That will radically change your motivation for moving through the world.

Food for Thought: “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.” (1 Peter 2:10 NLT).

The Temptation of Jesus

I always find this time before Easter a time for contemplation.  I can’t help thinking of the things Jesus went through and wonder, as Jesus, what he thought about.  We know much of that through scripture, but my heart just breaks to think of what he had to go through for us.

We are doing a study on “Prayer” in Sunday School class.  More specifically, fervent prayer, the kind that goes from the tips of your toes and the top of your head, meeting smack dab in the middle of your heart.  Sometimes it takes a broken heart and spirit to surrender completely and sometimes it is absolute, total faith, knowing full well that you are in the grace of God.

Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness.  He went without food and was tempted continuously by Satan.  Do you think it was easy for him?  He was on earth in human form for us, so I think he was hungry and tired.  But everything that happened, was. for. us.  The Spirit led him there where we know he was tempted for those 40 days.  We know he was tempted in every way and never fled.  He embraced and faced down each and every one.

What does your wilderness look like?  Is it a tough season with hardships, pain and obstacles?  Our wilderness may be an obsession with food, alcohol, gambling or even pornography.  Should we avoid wilderness temptation?  What is the motivation?  Is it pride, fear, or doubt?  We are faced with temptation every day.  Where does your strength come from?  It takes more than “our will”.  It takes the will and strength of our Lord, who knows exactly what we are facing.

Hopefully, none of us face the wilderness alone, but still, we face it.  Through fervent prayer, faith and love, Jesus will walk through that wilderness with us, every step of the way.  Not only did he go through that wilderness, he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane for, not his will, but the will of his father, even knowing what he faced.  Could we walk his wilderness?

King James Bible

The Temptation of Jesus

(Matthew 4:1-11Mark 1:12-13)

1 And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,2 Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. 3 And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6  And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

The Sovereign God

You know, I think I am going to wander a little from the subject of this article.  Imagine that.

As many of you know, it seems like my family has been under attack lately.  After my brothers passing a year and a half ago, there have been cousins, sisters, granddaughters, a brother in-law and now a nephew.  I praise God every day that they all know/knew Him as their personal savior.  God has a plan for each of them.  My hope and prayer is that, according to His will, they will be totally healed.  If God chooses to heal them in heaven instead, then I will choose to accept that His plan is bigger and better than mine.

No matter how grateful you are for God’s love and His plan, sometimes a doubt tries to wiggle its way into your heart and mind.  That’s when the bond of friendship and support steps in and lifts you up.  I am so thankful for each of you and your prayers.  I am so thankful for our Thursday group.  We are small, but God is faithful and present with us every week.  There are many weeks that their love and friendship and support keep me strong for one more week.  We all have a bond and it is strengthened by the love of Christ.

We need to always remember to be thankful.  If you don’t know what for, just look around you.  I thank God for Pastor Tom and Jean.  Their total, unselfish devotion to our church family is amazing.  I thank God for all of the answered prayers and everyone who makes our church family what it is.

We need to pray.  Pray for healing – of bodies, minds and our spirits.  Pray for strength and comfort for all who are hurting and all who don’t have the support system that we do.  Pray for our president.  Even if you don’t like him, he is our president and needs every prayer he can get.

We need to love.  Love God and love your neighbor, even when they aren’t very lovable.  Make the first move.  A kind word and maybe, the only hug they have had for a long time.  It truly is the little things.  Show them God’s love.  You may be the only Bible they ever read.

One of my favorite quotes is from the movie War Room:  “You‘ve got to plead with God so that He can do what only He can do. Then you‘ve got to get out of the way and let Him do it!” Miss Clara.

The Sovereign God

The Daniel Plan

Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. —1 Chronicles 29:11 NIV

God is sovereign. That means he rules over every event, even the tiniest, and he is in control of what happens to us. He knows everything—nothing is a mystery to him. He has perfect wisdom—he knows what will be the outcome of anything anyone does. He has all power—he can do anything that is consistent with his nature. By his sovereignty, he rules his whole creation. Because God is sovereign, we can have lasting change and spiritual growth only if we cooperate with God in pursuing them. We can’t change on our own. Yet he won’t do it without our cooperation. In his love, he has granted us the freedom to choose whether and how we want to change. We have the awesome privilege of being in partnership with the Creator of the universe in the task of shaping our lives according to his design.

Food for Thought: Pursue your transformation, knowing that the sovereign God is working in you according to the plan he dreamed for you when he created you.

Take Long Walks

Except for hurricane season, I would LOVE to be close enough to the beach to walk it any time I want!  That is one of my favorite activities.  It’s a wonderful stress reliever and terrific exercise too.

Meanwhile, wherever we are, there are beautiful areas to walk and numerous activities to join.  Gyms are numerous, but if that isn’t for you then do whatever you enjoy.  The important thing is to MOVE.

So, what do you love to do?  Swimming is always fun and great exercise.  How about golf, pickle ball, softball, bicycle riding, line dancing or just a long walk.  No exercise is a good exercise if you won’t do it.  Go out and enjoy yourself!

Take Long Walks
from Life Is Better at the Beach

In the high-speed, go-go-go nature of our everyday lives, taking care of ourselves can often fall to the wayside. It gets smothered under other needs — and suddenly we’re left feeling worn-out and sick. Our shoulders tense from stress, we’ve been eating way too much fast food, and we’re having constant aches and pains. Does this sound familiar?

Taking care of yourself physically is so important — important enough to do every single day.

Remember how much you love taking long walks on the beach? At sunrise, sunset, or anytime in between, long walks on the beach are beneficial for mind and body. How often did you wish you hadn’t walked the beach? You probably can’t recall a time. Walks on the beach are always a good idea, and they are a great way to take care of your body.

To take care of yourself physically, begin by making small changes in the way you take care of your body, and you’ll start to see big results. Add greens to your morning smoothie, make that doctor’s appointment you keep putting off, stretch before you go to bed, and drink more water — with a few lemon slices for extra flavor. Sign up for that yoga class, ask a friend to keep you accountable for your eating habits, and introduce a new vegetable to your dinner table every week. And, of course, go for walks. There are countless ways you can take care of yourself.

You only have one body. It’s easy to neglect it and even harder to get back on track — we’ve all been there. It is an uphill climb. But, just like taking walks on the beach, you won’t regret it.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. — 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV

The God of Hope

Remember my saying not so long ago that there are times that I just can’t wrap my mind around the words that I want?  Today is one of those days.   There are so many who are sick and are facing challenges that they never anticipated facing.  I know many of you can relate.

As I contemplated this email, once again, song lyrics came to mind.  It’s a song I have loved since the first time I heard it because it applies to our lives so often.  It goes like this:

 Lord, I Need You

Matt Maher

Lord, I come, I confess
Bowing here I find my rest
Without You I fall apart
You’re the One that guides my heart

Lord, I need You, oh, I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

Where sin runs deep Your grace is more
Where grace is found is where You are
And where You are, Lord, I am free
Holiness is Christ in me

Lord, I need You, oh, I need You
Every hour I need You
My one defense, my righteousness
Oh God, how I need You

Teach my song to rise to You
When temptation comes my way
And when I cannot stand I’ll fall on You
Jesus,…

Thank you Lord, for always being there when I need you.

Pray unceasingly,

In His light,

Lois

  The God of Hope

The Daniel Plan

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. —Romans 15:13

Even when our situation is full of challenges, we can confidently pray that the God of hope will fill us with the joy and peace that come from believing in him. He won’t let us down. And in those moments when we feel we can’t go any farther, throwing our reliance wholly on him is crucial. We need the power of the Holy Spirit if we want to abound in hope. He is always right there ready to help us when we ask.

God also asks for our participation in the process. We can integrate faith and fitness for maximum benefit because getting up and moving our bodies actually lifts our mood and alleviates anxiety, depression, and stress. Spending time with a friend is another way to connect with God’s hope. Consider taking a brisk and prayerful walk with a friend. He often provides his arms of love through those closest to us.

Food for Thought: Joy and peace come from the God of hope.

Satisfied

Sometimes I forget that I know my body better than anyone else.  I was reminded of that last week when I was informed that I had an inherited trait that puts me at very high risk for a stroke or heart disease.  Because of this, I was given a prescription for a medicine, as a preventive, and I reacted to it.  Even though it isn’t common to react to it, I am sensitive to meds and did.  That being said, I will depend on God and common sense to act as my preventative.

My “warning” also came with dietary guidelines.   The guidelines could have come straight out of The Daniel Plan book!  Considering I have been eating this way and exercising for three years now, I think my risk has to be lower than they think.

I have several reasons for doing this plan, but I really like this:

“The reason is to be able to live with purpose, to love, to serve, to connect, to celebrate all the gifts God has given us.”  So that is what I try to do.

Pray Unceasingly!

The Daniel Plan

The poor will eat and be satisfied; those who seek the Lord will praise him. —Psalm 22:26

Dr. Mark Hyman says, “Food has the power to heal us. It is the most potent tool we have to prevent and treat many of our chronic diseases.”

The reason to eat real food is not to fit into our jeans or to look good in a dress or to be a certain size for a family reunion, but it’s to be awake to the beauty and miracle of life.

The reason is to be able to live with purpose, to love, to serve, to connect, to celebrate all the gifts God has given us.

What we put on the end of the fork has the power to equip us with the energy and vitality to live for God.

Dr. Hyman also says, “The beauty of adding food that heals, nourishes, and satisfies you deeply is that it will almost effortlessly shift your body and mind into a state where you naturally crave what makes you thrive and feel good.” It’s time to thrive.

Food for Thought: Real whole food has the power to give us the energy we were designed to live with.
