Give Thanks

Happy Monday and Happy Thanksgiving!

We are in full blown holiday mode now!  In just a few days we celebrate Thanksgiving.  It’s a time to gather with our families or even gather as a community to give back to others!

While I gather with family, our church has a decades long tradition off serving the community.  The doors are opened to anyone and everyone who wants to come.  There is no cost.  We also deliver a good number of meals to people who have to work that day.

This, to me, is what Thanksgiving is about.  I love sharing the day with family, and sometimes some that aren’t, but have nowhere else to go.  Our amazing church serves 200-250 meals every year to whoever wants to participate.  We have volunteers from, not only the church, but from people in the community who just want to participate.  We share a good hot traditional Thanksgiving meal and the opportunity to see what Christian love looks like.  Sometimes, people return.  Sometimes they don’t but we pray that there has been a seed planted deep in their hearts that will point them to Jesus.

In the end, we are all family.  A part of the family of God and we are so grateful for what we have and love to share it with others.

What are you grateful for today?  Have you thanked God for it?  I am sharing some tips below for ways to show gratitude.  My prayer is that we will all remember everything we have to be grateful for, then share it with others.

Pray Unceasingly!!

and I will glorify your name forever.  Psalm 86:12  ESV

5 WAYS TO SHOW GRATITUDE DAILY – Senior Living News

In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, God directs you “in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” While that may seem overwhelming to accomplish, the Bible provides directions on how to achieve that level of complete gratitude.

Here are five ways to show gratitude in the mundane as well as the exceptional. From the staff or neighbors in your assisted living community in Monument to visits from family or good news at the doctor’s office, find things each day to be thankful for.

  1. REMEMBER HIM

There’s no greater sign of appreciation than to be remembered in any and everything you do. Think of it like the feeling you get when somebody remembers your birthday or that one time you won an award for something.

Truly remembering God means He is on your mind, more often than not throughout the day. He is a part of your thoughts, words, and deeds. Moreover, remembering Him means sharing Him with others. Psalms 3:6 says “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

  1. SERVE OTHERS

One of the most profound ways to express your gratitude to God is by serving others in His name. In 1 Peter 4:10 you are directed; “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” Thus, by serving others you are serving God and showing your gratitude for His work in your life.

  1. EXPRESS GRATITUDE TO OTHERS

God honors expressions of gratitude towards others who are serving you. Any kindness regardless of size is a reason to express your thanks. A simple verbal “thank you” or a more formal thank you note/card is all it takes to show God you are grateful and make someone’s world a little brighter at the same time.

  1. CHOOSE TO BE HUMBLE

You’re an amazing person. That goes without saying, and anyone with any sense already knows that. Therefore, it’s not necessary for you to tell anyone how amazing you are.

In James 4:10 God says, “Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”

This goes beyond simply holding back on expressing your individual greatness. It extends to the attitude you express when faced with trials in life. Choosing to be humble and grateful for the chance to overcome rather than angry and bitter over the challenge shows gratitude for God’s plan and guidance. It demonstrates your trust in God and His wisdom.

  1. PRAY

One of the truest ways to demonstrate your appreciation to God is to simply pray and tell Him. God loves to hear from you. He often wonders why you never call or write.

Seriously though, prayer is the simplest and surest way to convey appreciation to God. Sincere simple prayer, given from the heart and expressing your thanks for the wonderful life you’ve been given, will touch God deeply.

There are no hard and fast rules about praying. Come to God just as you are. Even if you’ve never prayed before, it’s never too late to start.

Every day is a testimony to God’s work in your life. Take time every day to express your gratitude for that life and it will promote a sense of joy in everything you do.

Spiritual Warfare

Happy Monday!

I was reminded recently of just how much, as the body of Christ, we need to stay connected.  Some of the strongest people I know are fighting battles, both seen and unseen.  We are all familiar with the battles with illness, heartbreak, and finances but there is another battle waging that is more threatening than all the others.  This battle will determine, not only our earthy lives but also our eternal lives.

We have talked about spiritual warfare before but, in my humble opinion, Satan is getting desperate.  He knows the time is short.  He doesn’t have to worry about those who are of the world, they are already his but that’s not enough.  He wants the believers, you and me, as part of his army.  We are the ones that he is prowling around for, waiting to find us vulnerable so he can insert fear and doubt into our hearts and mind.  As believers, we won’t go long without encountering spiritual warfare.  It’s a battle between darkness and light and we are the prize.

If we look around, we see lies and deception everywhere.  There is anger and frustration with politics and politicians, no matter which side you may be on.  If you stop and think about it though, what better way is there for the enemy to tear us apart than by dividing us.  Dividing our country, our families and our churches.  Will we let him?  We know how the story ends.  We need to stand up for real truth and that comes from only one source, the Word of God.

Satan is the master of lies and deception.  Deception begins with questioning.  Instead of going back to the source, God’s Word, we are carried away by doubt.  Paul warns us in             1 Timothy 4:16  “Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.”

If we “take heed,” we are aware.  We can prepare by studying God’s Word so we are able to discern those things that present themselves as truth. God reminds us in His word to stay aware of Satan’s schemes, to live alert in this world, and to stay close to Him.  We need to spend time in prayer, worship, and fellowship with other believers to stand strong.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 discusses the warfare of spirit, saying “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

Thankfully we can look to the wisdom of scripture and the Armor of God to encourage us in this spiritual war.

Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Joshua 1:9

9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

A Spiritual Warfare Prayer – The BibleStudyTools Staff

Strengthen my faith, Lord. Forgive my sins, so that I may be clean in your righteousness. Make me brave, so I can stand and fight the spiritual battles in my life and in our world. Give me your wisdom and discernment so I won’t be caught off guard. Together, Lord, we’ll win, because in truth, you already have. While evil still roams, the power of Your name and Your blood rises up to defeat and bring us victory against every evil planned against us. While malicious actions may disturb us, we use the armor of God You have given us to stand firm. You will bring justice in due time for all the harm and needless violence aimed at Your children. Until then, we remain in Your presence, aligned with Your purposes, and we look to You as our Supreme Commander and Protector. Help us to avoid temptation, and deliver us from evil, Lord. You are the Mighty One, the One Who will ultimately bring all evil to light. With You, Jesus, we are safe. Amen.

Go Gently Through This Day – “Jesus Calling”

Happy Monday!

As we go forward into a new month tomorrow, maybe we should take the time to just put our focus on Jesus.  We are coming into the busiest time of the year.  If you are anything like me, it is so easy to get caught up in what you perceive is expected of you.  Maybe, what you get caught up in is the pressure of what you expect of yourself.  Either way,  think ank about what you are focusing on and WHO you should be focusing on.

Go gently, don’t rush through the day, never seeing or feeling what is really important.  Once again, put your eyes and your trust on Jesus.  It is only in Jesus we will find peace and rest.  He is where we will find sustenance.

Even though we are currently in the world, we can rest in knowing where our eternity lies, in the kingdom of Heaven!

Are you ready to face tomorrow?  Be it good or bad.  He still holds us in His hands.

Pray Unceasingly!!

Lois

Jesus Calling”:

GO GENTLY THROUGH THIS DAY, keeping your eyes on Me.  I will open up the way before you, as you take steps of trust along your path.

Sometimes the way before you appears to be blocked. If you focus on the obstacle… you will probably go off course. Instead, focus on Me, the Shepherd who is leading you along your life-journey. Before you know it, the “obstacle” will be behind you and you will hardly know how you pass through it.

That is the secret of success in My kingdom. Although you remain aware of the visible world around you, your primary awareness is of Me. When the road before you looks rocky, you can trust Me… My Presence enables you to face each day with confidence.

JOHN 10:14-15 ~ “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.

ISAIAH 26:7 ~ The path of the righteous is level; O Upright One, you make the way of the righteous smooth.

Take 2: Elizabeth Baxter’s 10 Secrets to a Happy Marriage (When We Were Young by Karen Kingsbury)

Happy Monday!

If you have been hanging out with me for a while, you may remember the “10 Secrets”.  This has a special meaning to me this week though.  Our grandson got married last week and I gave them a framed copy of this.

How I wish I would have had a copy of this many years ago.  Maybe I would have made more mature decisions through my adult life.  The other thing that I never remember hearing, in all of my years growing up in church, is that marriage vows aren’t just a vow you repeat to each other.   Marriage vows also are a covenant that you are making with God.  While everyone’s situation is different, I believe if everyone had a copy of this and referred to it often, there would be less anger, abuse and divorce.  That being said, abusive situations have to be dealt with.

When I first read that you should love God more than your spouse, I did a double take.  How can that be was my first reaction.  But when you think about it, if you always put God first, everything else in your life will fall into place according to His plan.

There was a time in my life that I didn’t understand the “His plan” thing either.  All that time I wasted trying to figure out what “my” plan was supposed to be.

The rest is pretty simple, clear and basically, the only cost is your puffed up pride…  I probably had an abundance of that too.  I still find myself struggling with that one now and then.  I have been a work in progress all of my life and I am comfortable with that.  I will never be as good as I should be in my eyes but it is such a comfort knowing I am His daughter and I am good enough for Him and He loves me.

Elizabeth Baxter’s 10 Secrets to a Happy Marriage (When We Were Young by Karen Kingsbury)

Keep God first – By loving God more than your spouse, you will always be humble enough to love your spouse more than humanly possible.  This makes for a beautiful marriage.

Matthew 6:33 – But first seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Divorce is not an option – From the beginning, remove the word “divorce” from your vocabulary.  People do not look for a door where one does not exist.

Mark 10:9 – Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate.

Marriage is not 50/50 – There will be days when one of you falls short.  Make it your goal to give 100 percent every day.  That way you are covered.  Every day, forever!

Colossians 3:23 – Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.

Know your spouse’s love language – People speak love in different ways.  Gifts, acts of service, words of affirmation,

physical touch, intentional time.  Figure out how to speak to each other so that the love between you will grow.

Romans 12:9 – Love must be sincere.

Expect the best of each other, be patient, and forgive easily.  Attitude is everything in marriage.  Look for ways to humbly be kind to your spouse.  Keep short accounts.  Don’t worry about being right.

Ephesians 4:2 – Be patient, bearing with one another in love.

Colossians 3:13 – Bear with each other and forgive one another… forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Keep dating – Your marriage must be a priority.  Seek God first, then your spouse. Each other.  Every day.  Never stop dating and pursuing each other.  Value and celebrate your love.

Song of Solomon 3:2 – I must seek the one my soul loves.

Build each other up – Kind words are free.  Look for ways to encourage each other.  Every day.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 – Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.

Laugh often – Find reasons to be silly.  Smile and be light-hearted.  You’ll laugh about it later, so make up your mind to laugh about it today.

Proverbs 17:22 – A cheerful heart is good medicine.

Live within your means – Couples who get in debt stay stressed.  Living within your means can be great fun.  Take walks.  Play board games.  Visit your park, clip coupons.

Hebrews 13:5 – Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.

Fix yourself, not your spouse – Work to be kinder and gentler.  Be the person your spouse married.  Listen well.  Be intentional.

Matthew 7:3 – Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?

Cardiac Rehab – Dan Sites

Happy Monday!

I am very blessed in having some pastor friends who are also talented writers.  Dan is one of those.  He had posted this last week and I just really liked the message.  He was kind enough to let me borrow it.

How many of us are following the FITT Principle?  If we aren’t, maybe we are in need of a little cardiac rehab!  Increase the intensity as needed!

The funny part is that with each one of these, if you practice them diligently, others will benefit and I believe you will find that the benefits reflect right back on you!

I can truthfully say that when I put a little extra time into the FITT Principle, I feel healthier and happier.

Will you do a little cardiac rehab with us too?

Pray Unceasingly!!

Lois

There are only two more visits to the cardiac rehab center scheduled for me. Barring something unforeseen, I’ll finish next Wednesday.

Lest I fall back into some old bad habits, the folk there gave me several sheets of information regarding a healthy lifestyle. The one I received yesterday was on exercise and used what it called the FITT Principle. Being more interested in spiritual health than physical health, I came up with different ways to apply the words than did that handout. I humbly submit my imagination for good spiritual health.

F = Frequency. Exercise 4 – 6 days per week. Find some way to exercise spiritually – read God’s Word, pray, talk to someone about Jesus, perform some act of kindness for someone. Feel free to add other activities.

I = Intensity. Go deeper in your Bible study. Pray for more than just those on your “sick list.” Get out of your comfort zone when you choose a good deed. Stretch yourself.

T = Time. Increase the time you spend studying, praying, and serving others.  The old hymn speaks of the “sweet hour of prayer.” Have you ever tried that?

T = Type. There is a myriad of ways to spiritually exercise. Take a plate of cookies to your new neighbor. Rake the leaves for another neighbor. Visit the elderly in their various types of living situations. Sing some songs to/with your family. Volunteer at your church to teach or help with a Sunday school class or children’s worship. You’ll learn a lot from those kids! Really read and study.

God designed us to be healthy. Age and disease can decrease our physical health. The above approach may be able to help with our spiritual health. Are you willing to work toward better health spiritually? God will bless you if you do.

8 Ways to Beat Your Junk Food Habit – Mark Hyman, MD

Happy Monday!

I went delving into the past to find this week’s article.  I did this email in October of 2015 and it is just as true now as it was then.  I will be printing it and hanging it up somewhere that I can’t ignore it!

I have changed a few words and the statistics are 7 years old so I would guess they have increased also.

Here we are at the beginning of the holiday season.  Halloween is right around the corner.  Not a big holiday at our house, but depending on where you live, this day may mean you have a lot of candy and other sweets around the house.  Sometimes, this can give new meaning to “bet you can’t eat just one”!  I have found that if I avoid sugar, I don’t crave sugar.  If I eat sugar, look out because I want to eat more and more!  We also have Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up.  Two more holidays notoriously known for overeating!  Have you ever found yourself lying around on Thanksgiving afternoon, barely able to keep your eyes open and overall, feeling WAY more stuffed than a turkey??  Ditto for Christmas.  Carb and sugar overload!

God wants us to be good stewards of ALL He has given us and that includes our bodies.  He gave us one, one body to last us, all of our lives on this earth.  In these next couple of months, think of how you can honor God by being a better steward of everything He has blessed us with.  What baby steps can we take to improve our health so we can serve Him better?  It is only through His grace and mercy that we are here at all.

Pray Unceasingly

 In His light,

Lois

Everything Is Connected – The Links Between the Mind and the Body

Everything is connected.  Your entire body, and all of the core systems in it, interact as a single sophisticated symphony.  You are one whole person and all of the pieces of your biology and your unique genetic code interact with your environment (including the food that you eat) to determine how sick or how well you are at this moment.  This means your mind and your body are connected, as well.  The body and the mind are a single, bi-directional system.  What you do to one has enormous impact on the other.  What you do to your body, you do to your brain.  Heal your body and you will heal your brain.

8 Ways to Beat Your Junk Food Habit

Mark Hyman, MD

“I love junk food, and I can’t stop craving it,” a reader posted on my Facebook page. “What do I do?”

If you can identify with my reader, you’re not alone. Of the more than 600,000 food products – note I said food products, not food – 80 percent have added sugar.

We went from eating about 10 pounds of sugar per person, per year in 1800 to 152 pounds of sugar (and 146 pounds of flour) per person, per year today. Think about it: On average we eat about one pound of sugar every day!

Those sugar-loaded foods literally become drugs: Doses of sugar and flour that hijack our metabolism and make us fat and sick.

Many patients tell me once they dive into a box of chips or cookies, they literally can’t stop eating. Have you ever wondered why you would devour a box of cookies but you wouldn’t binge on wild salmon?

The reason isn’t because you lack self-discipline or are weak-willed. You are not emotionally weak or lazy. You are biologically addicted to sugar, and willpower doesn’t work here.

The good news is that I have something that does work. But let’s take a quick look at what created that addiction.

The Science of Sugar Addiction

A powerful study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition proves that higher-sugar, higher-glycemic foods are addictive in the same way as cocaine and heroin.

Dr. David Ludwig and his colleagues at Harvard proved that foods with more sugar — those that raise blood sugar quickly or have what is called a high-glycemic index — trigger a special region in the brain called the nucleus accumbens.  This is your brain’s pleasure center that, when activated, makes you feel good and drives you to seek out more of that feeling.  This area becomes ground zero for conventional addictions such as gambling and drug abuse.

The study ultimately proved two things:

– Your body responds quite differently to different calories, even if the protein, fat, carbs, and taste are exactly the same.

– Foods that spike blood sugar are biologically addictive.

That addiction triggers a vicious cycle of hunger and cravings that sets the stage for diabesity and other chronic diseases.

Constantly eating sugary foods causes a spike in your blood sugar, which in turn, activates your brain’s pleasure center.  This triggers more cravings, and drives you to seek out more and more of the substance that gives you a “high.”

You become powerless against your brain’s hardwired response to seek out pleasure. No wonder you feel trapped!

We are programmed genetically to crave sugar and refined carbs.

Why Your Junk Food Addiction Isn’t Your Fault

How long can you hold your breath underwater?

That might seem like a strange question concerning sugar addiction, but if I tell you to use your willpower to hold your breath for 15 minutes and that I will give you a million dollars if you do, there is still no way you can do this.

Sure, you might try, but you would fail. That’s because we are programmed for certain needs like air, water, food, and sleep.  These things are essential to our survival. If you are addicted to sugar and I tell you to resist giving in to your cravings by using willpower, I might as well tell you to hold your breath for 15 minutes. It simply won’t work.

Nobody wants to be overweight or suffer the emotional or physical consequences of diabetes or obesity. But willpower simply isn’t enough to overcome the cravings for chips, cookies, soda, and more.

We’re up against powerful biochemical mechanisms created by food addiction. Willpower becomes useless when industrial junk food and sugar are in charge of your brain chemistry.

Fake foods that we’ve been introduced to in the 20th century – many of which contain high-fructose corn syrup and other added sugars – have hijacked our brains, our hormones, and our metabolism.

These Frankenfoods have literally created a vicious cycle of hunger and cravings.  There is no such thing as junk food. There’s just junk, and there’s food.

I have a simple yet radical proposal: Let’s send the trillion-dollar junk food industry a message and eat real food. That means foods nature created, which don’t come with barcodes, fake ingredients, or an ingredient list at all.

To do that, we need to rewire our brains. A researcher at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) told me the real regulator of our weight and metabolism isn’t our stomach, but our brain chemistry. The right foods send a message to your brain to shut down hunger and cravings so you burn fat and feel great. Sugary, processed foods send the opposite message.

The Right Mind Shift to Fight Cravings

Making the right choices to opt for real, whole, unprocessed foods becomes crucial to ditch the junk food habit, but so do your emotional triggers and emotional health.

Whenever you get a strong desire for a chocolate chip cookie or other junk food, ask yourself two questions:

– What am I feeling?

– What do I need?

What we need does not involve stuffing your face, I can assure you of that.  We have a chance today to stop and detox, not only from junk food, but also from junk thoughts. We must de-clutter our bodies and our minds.

Breaking these addictions and rewiring your brain is easier than you might think. It doesn’t take weeks or months. These eight strategies can help:

1.) Eat real food. You need to eat fat and protein for each of your meals. Whole foods carbohydrates like veggies, legumes, nuts and seeds are perfectly healthy. Broccoli is broccoli. Processed, sugary junk foods are not real foods. They set the stage for sugar addiction and all its ugly consequences.

2.) Steady blood sugar levels. Eat a nutritious breakfast with some protein like eggs, protein shakes, or nut butters. Studies repeatedly show that eating a healthy high-protein breakfast helps people maintain weight loss. Also, have smaller meals throughout the day. Eat every three to four hours and have some protein with each snack or meal (lean animal protein, nuts, seeds, beans). Avoid eating three hours before bedtime.

3.) Ditch sugar. Go cold turkey. If you are addicted to narcotics or alcohol you can’t simply just cut down. You have to stop for your brain to reset. You must eliminate refined sugars, sodas, fruit juices, and artificial sweeteners from your diet. These are all drugs that fuel sugar addiction.

4.) Reduce stress. Stress eating and junk food go together. When you’re feeling stressed, you’re more likely to reach for that bag of chocolate chip cookies or whatever your vice might be. Learn to address the root cause of your stress and address it with something like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing. My UltraCalm CD becomes a great way to melt away stress and anxiety and beat your junk food addiction.

5.) Exercise smartly. The next time you get a hankering for something sweet, walk it off… Literally! Besides creating a healthy distraction to avoid nose-diving into a pint of butter pecan ice cream, exercise tapers cravings and raises feel-good endorphin levels. Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned athlete, you can find an easy-to-implement exercise plan here.

6.) Determine whether food sensitivities could be causing your cravings. We often crave the very foods that we have a hidden allergy to, including gluten dairy, and sugar.

7.) Sleep well. Ever notice you’re hungrier for something sugary after a terrible night’s sleep? Studies show lack of sleep increases cravings.

Storms

Happy Monday!

And just like that, it’s October!  The final quarter of 2022.

We have dealt with new variants and record breaking, well, almost everything this year has been record breaking!  We have had shortages, prices that have increased tremendously and all the things that politics bring in a tough year.

This past week, in Florida, Hurricane Ian hit Florida.  Here in my part of central Florida, we were beyond blessed to have had very little damage.  Unfortunately, beginning in as little as 40-50 miles away there was substantial flooding and damage and southwest Florida was catastrophic.  My heart breaks for all those whose lives will never be the same after this storm.

The one thing that I felt, more this time than ever, is total peace.  Throughout it all, there was never a doubt that we were in God’s hands.  My heartfelt prayers go out to the storm victims.  My prayers also go out to all of those who are going through internal storms.  We never truly know what others are going through so just be kind.

I ran across the little blurb on Advent Health’s site and though it was appropriate for this week.  I didn’t print all 10 of the scriptures they used but picked out 3 really good ones!

worked hard to think through your family’s every need in the event of an emergency. You’ve likely thought through how you’ll sleep and what you’ll eat. You’ve organized your emergency kit and first aid supplies, and know how to safeguard your home. You know how to protect the “physical.”

“But the truth is that a dangerous storm can take just as great a toll on the spirit. Armed with these verses, you can help your family find comfort — even when the wind is whipping, the house is dark and you just aren’t sure what’s happening outside your home’s walls. They can help you remember that God is in control and wants you to seek refuge in Him. After all, there’s no weather too rough for the One who created it”.  Advent Health

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
— John 14:27 (NIV)

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
— Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)

Happy Monday!

If you are in the hurricane watch area, know I am praying for you and I would appreciate your prayers also.

Once again, I had something planned to write about today but something happened to change it.

We went to the movies on Sunday afternoon and saw “Running the Bases.”  I am guessing you are thinking this is a movie about baseball.   Well, it is, sort of.  There are ball teams and coaches in the movie, but the movie is about something so much deeper, so much more vital than baseball.  This movie is about the message.  A message that really brings it back to the foundation of our beliefs as Christians.  If you possibly can, go see “Running the Bases.”  You won’t regret it.  (You might want to take some tissues.)

Almost daily, we hear of someone challenging our rights as Christians.  Not only in the outside world but in our businesses and even our churches.  I keep telling myself that they must really be afraid of us or they wouldn’t be fighting it so hard.  They should be afraid.  We know how the story ends and they won’t be on the winning team!

Meanwhile, we have to be prepared to stand up for what we believe in.  We will be persecuted and ridiculed.  The question is, are we strong enough to uphold our faith through it all.

2 Corinthians 4:9-11  NIV

persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body.

Trust God – No Matter What

Happy Monday!

Have you noticed just how hard the enemy (that’s Satan) is working?  I can’t prove that he hasn’t worked this hard in the past but I know I see it more and more every single day.

He has perfected his craft.  Sometimes, he is subtle, so subtle that you may not even notice.  Other times he is in your face ugly and takes great joy in your misery.  You know the feeling, just about the time you think all is well again, he comes on full force.  He has no consideration, he will hurt us physically, mentally, and spiritually, then he goes after all those that we love.  You know that job that you love?  He would love to take that from you too.   ,

Is this story beginning to sound familiar?  The book of Job tells of a righteous man who faithfully responded to very difficult trials.  It brings to light really difficult questions about why we suffer and why we should trust God, no matter how unfair things seem.  Job was a prime example of Satan’s attack.  He literally lost everything.  His children, his wealth, and his health.  His friends were not helpful as they tried to convince Job that it had to be his actions that caused all this to happen. Job was relentless in his denial though and all he wanted was a direct audience with God.

As you know, God finally granted that wish.  Job’s complaint, of course, was that God has no reason for allowing all the evil things that have happened to him.

And God’s response was “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?” God asks, and forcibly reminds Job of how little he knows about the way the world is put together.

“Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me if you have understanding”

Sometimes we need a reminder that God is still God.  Job finally concludes that wisdom belongs to God. No matter how hard we may try, our attempts to understand it are bound to fail.

The next time you are being attacked, think about Job.  Know that we don’t always understand what’s happening or why.  But God does.

Can we trust God to hold us in His hands?  The same God that created all the world, including us, holds us and loves us.
