God Is On The Throne

Happy Monday!

I’m not sure about anyone else, but last week wasn’t a great week.  That being said, it is nice not to be bombarded by political ads and rhetoric of an election year.  But you know what?  No matter who is in Washington DC, GOD is still on the throne!  Yesterday, today, tomorrow and for all eternity, God is on the throne!

8 God reigns over the nations;

God is seated on his holy throne.

9 The nobles of the nations assemble

as the people of the God of Abraham,

for the kings c of the earth belong to God;

he is greatly exalted.  Psalm 47:8-9

God is on the throne, He is in control!  I have to remind myself that my goal is to be more Christlike, to have the mind of Jesus, not just in an election year, but every single day.  If we know more about politics than we do about God and His church, we are studying the wrong thing.

Think about the values and the priorities of Jesus versus those of politics. Politics compete with the Kingdom of God.  All politics are temporary.  The Kingdom of God, His church (don’t mistake this for denominational) is eternal.  It will last forever!  God is on the throne!

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

What we desperately need to hear is not from politicians but the word of God.  Guided by grace, we need to transform our minds to see, and accept, His perfect will.  That doesn’t sound so difficult, right?  The truth is, until we learn and accept His perfect will, how are we able to make better decisions?  It’s only when we can do that, that we can decide what GOD wants us to do (no, He didn’t ask our advice) and the tension in our lives goes down.  He is so much better at taking care of things than us and the weight on our shoulders gets really heavy if we can’t give it to Him.  God is on the throne!

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,
declares the Lord.
As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
  Isaiah 55:8-9

Politicians say they will solve all of your problems and save the world.  Jesus says only He can save you!

God is on the throne.  That’s pretty clear.  Politics are the force that drives the world.  The people have become dependent on government, instead of God.  But in the Word, Jesus tells us His church matters more than anything else.  He loves His church (us) more than anything and if we are going to be effective, we have to love the church like Jesus.

God is on the throne!  Hallelujah!

God’s Secret to A Total Makeover

God’s Secret to A Total Makeover

I first posted this a little over five years ago.  Time has passed quickly, but it still holds true.  It just really called my name again for this week.  So, with a couple of tweaks, here it is again.

Sometimes I have a week, a day, or even an hour when nothing goes right and I begin to feel like I have failed… again.  Does anyone else ever feel that way?  Is it time for another pity party, already??  Thankfully, I think I have made it beyond the pity parties, but sometimes I do get discouraged.  The scale refuses to cooperate and I have to wonder how I can motivate and encourage anyone else when I fail.

As I was thinking about all of this, other things began to come to mind.  (Maybe God’s little nudges.)  Not only has my health and my husband’s health improved, but other group members gave me great testimonies in their own health improvements since starting the lifestyle.  I have had the great pleasure of seeing the joy in another’s eyes when she finally had a break through.  It’s a little like the stock market, if you aren’t in it for the long haul, the first dip that comes along will do you in.

There is no miracle pill that you take and are magically transformed into some ideal image that may be stuck in your mind.  It is a healthy lifestyle change and just like God’s transformation, it comes from the inside to the outside.

Pray Unceasingly!

In His light,

Lois

 2 Corinthians 12:9

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

God’s Secret to A Total Makeover

Rick Warren

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Change is great on the outside, but real change comes from the inside out. It’s more than cosmetic; it’s more than a skinnier version of the same old you. God wants you to be made new from the inside out – spirit, soul, and body.

God puts them in that order in his Word: “May the God who gives us peace make you holy in every way and keep your whole being – spirit, soul, and body – free from every fault at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23 TEV).

God knows that real change comes from the inside. It’s great’s to clean out the fridge and get rid of the junk food in the pantry. But what about the junk food in your head? The old lies, the empty values, the false perceptions? Ephesians 4:23 says, “Be made new in the attitude of your minds” (NIV).

There are two words in today’s verse from Romans 12 that I want to focus on –

Conform. According to the dictionary, conform means to “make or become the same” or “to behave in a conventional way by accepting without question the customs, traditions and prevailing opinions of others.” How often do we do this? We think, “Oh everybody else is doing it so it must be okay.” But God says, “Don’t conform to the ways of this world. Stop and think about what you’re doing.”

Transform. Transform means “to change the condition, function, nature, character or personality” of something. It means changing from the inside out. In Romans 12, Paul says to transform yourself not by trying to be like the rest of the world, but by renewing your mind, by changing the way you think.

God wants a new you who not only looks different, but who lives and thinks and speaks and acts differently. He wants a new you who has taken a 180-degree turn and is headed in a new direction, no longer pursuing an old way of life, no longer trying to conform and fit in and be like everybody else. He wants a new you who is being transformed by the renewing of your mind – a new you who is being transformed into the likeness of Christ.

Come Unto Me

Happy Monday!

There are a lot of troubling things going on right now and many of us struggle with every part of it.

Leaning on Jesus in the midst of your struggles is a choice, but not always our first natural inclination.  All too often, we take our situation into our own hands only, instead of putting it into the only hands that are totally and fully equipped to carry our load!  It’s like our struggles suck us into a tornado of worries and doubt and fear and it’s hard to see past them all.

Weight loss isn’t easy. Marriage isn’t easy. Living in a global pandemic surely isn’t easy!

I look at my own struggles and the struggles of family and friends.  They aren’t easy!  They are uncomfortable, depressing and downright painful at times!

So, what can we do in the midst of these struggles?  I believe we all handle things differently and I certainly won’t be the one to tell you that you aren’t doing it right.  Only if I see that you are stepping back from God might you hear anything like that from me.

Some of the things I personally try to do in these times are as follows:

*Align my mind with His Word

*Root my thoughts in God when I feel out of control

*Humble myself at the feet of Jesus

*Ask for forgiveness

*Hold on like your life depends on it, because it does!

When we ask Jesus to take our load from us, sometimes, it is an immediate relief.  Other times it is more gradual.  Maybe because we are struggling to give it over fully and leave it there.  I am really good at that one.  I have had a lot of practice.

There is an old song that always comes to mind.  It was another that my mother loved and I never forgot.  Here is the first verse and chorus.

Come Unto Me

Hear the blessed Savior calling the oppressed,
“Oh, ye heavy-laden, come to Me and rest;
Come, no longer tarry, I your load will bear,
Bring Me every burden, bring Me every care.”
Refrain:
Come unto Me, I will give you rest;
Take My yoke upon you, hear Me and be blest;
I am meek and lowly, come and trust My might;
Come, My yoke is easy, and My burden’s light.

Are you heavy laden?   Do you just need to give it away and rest?  Jesus is waiting.

God’s Presence in Hard Times

Happy Monday!

While there are so many things these days that we can’t agree on, I believe that one thing we will all agree on is that the coming days, weeks, months, and maybe even years are going to be difficult.

We have already had an unprecedented year of pandemic, peaceful protests that have evolved into nothing but terrorism, and throw in an election year for good measure.  It is a nasty pre-election and there is an excellent chance that it will be a nasty election and post- election.  But, this isn’t about politics.

I believe God knew before time who our present leaders are and I believe he knows who our next leaders will be and thatis what this is about!

No matter who our present or future leaders are, God tells us we are to pray for them.  I know, it isn’t always easy, but I do find it easier than hating and resenting and constantly complaining.  When it comes down to it, much like unforgiveness, we are the one that it hurts, not them.   There is so much hate and division around us  .Do we want to be a part of that or do we want to be part of the solution?

“1 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior…” -1 Timothy 2:1-3

If we accept God’s word and accept that He is present in difficult times too, then it is easier to find peace in everything going on.

Do I get anxious about it all sometimes? Absolutely!  Can I change it?  Well yes and no.  I try to educate myself and vote the best to my knowledge.  Beyond that, I try to follow God’s direction and trust that He is there and knows all.  What I DO know is how it all ends!  Thank you, Lord!

14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

God’s Presence in Hard Times

Daily Reflection / Produced by The High Calling

“When you go through deep waters,  I will be with you.  When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown.  When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.”

Isaiah 43:2

The prophecies of Isaiah testify to the “deep waters” and “fires” of Israel’s experience. Because of her persistent rejection of the Lord, he disciplined Israel through the domination of foreign rulers.

Yet even in these hard times, God did not abandon his people. He promised to be with them, protecting them from ultimate devastation. Their lives would be tough, to be sure. They would face the “rivers of difficulty” and the “fire of oppression.” But the Lord would continue to be present to his people, sharing in their suffering and pain.

We face plenty of hard times in our own lives. We see our financial well-being threatened as world markets plummet. Or we ache when our children make choices we don’t support. Or we hear our doctor say the dreaded word cancer. Or we worry that we might lose our job. Or . . . you can fill in the blank with the difficulties of your own life.

God does not promise to give us easy lives. Until the new creation comes, we will struggle and suffer. Yet he does promise to be with us in our hard times: protecting us, comforting us, strengthening us, giving us wisdom. What good news!

QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION: When have you gone through “rivers of difficulty”? Did you sense God’s presence at the time? In retrospect, do you see God’s hand upon your life in those hard times? How does God make his presence known to us when we struggle and suffer?

PRAYER: Gracious God, how I thank you for the fact of your presence in my life, especially in times of difficulty. There have been so many times when I have hung onto this promise for dear life, trusting you for patience, strength, and courage. How grateful I am for your help . . . and even more, for your presence.

Lord, you know that sometimes it’s hard for me to sense your presence, especially when I am in pain or distress. You can seem a million miles away. So help me, I pray, to be aware of you. Open my heart to know you even in the midst of difficulties. May I be attentive to the still, small voice of your Spirit, even and especially when I need you most. Amen.

Gratitude, Not For Granted

Happy Monday!

I have been reminded this past week, once again, how easily I take for granted the things I normally do.

The majority of my family lives more than 1000 miles from me.  As much as I love being close to my younger daughter, it is very hard being so far away from my first born daughter and those grandchildren, along with my siblings and extended family.

With the year 2020, being what it is, our usual family reunion simply didn’t happen.  Finally, this past week we decided the time had come and we were going!  It was a wonderful week with the daughter and her family and I had a super mini reunion with other family members.  For good measure, we were able to visit dear friends along the way too.  As we grow older, this means more every year!

Another milestone was actually eating in a restaurant for the first time in 8 months!  My daughter assured me that they took super precautions and I was thrilled to learn they really did!  I felt very comfortable being there.

We really enjoyed the fall weather, picking out pumpkins and mums, and buying fresh picked apples.  We were able to visit Amish country, which has a lot of sentimental meaning to me and I loved taking pictures of field upon field of sunflowers, even though they were a little past peak.

Covid or not, God remains the same!  He gave me glimpses of such beauty while there and reminded me just how very much my family means to me and how much I miss them.  It is only through God’s grace that we were able to make this trip and have a wonderful time.

I pray that as we all continue to navigate our way through this difficult year, we remember how much the ordinary, simple pleasures mean to us.  I pray we never take for granted our families or God’s creation!  It is in the simple things that we find the greatest beauty and the people that have always been there for us that we find the greatest love!

If You’re Breathing, You Have a Purpose

Happy Monday!

When I first read the following blog, it hit me how long that it took me to believe this.  I would look around and see my friends and family members who seemed to be blessed with so many talents and qualities.  Therefore, I tried to be like them and do what they did.

It really wasn’t until just a few years ago that I realized that my God given purpose had absolutely nothing to do with what anyone else did.

I am not very good at expressing myself with people, but I discovered I enjoy visiting with Seniors who just crave someone to talk to.  They have so many stories to tell and many have no one to tell them to.

I was also reminded that while I sometimes have difficulty putting my feelings into words vocally, I love writing.  I am blessed to have people who are caring and patient enough to listen to me, even after all of these years.  So, thank you!

What have you noticed about what you do?  Do you feel like have you accomplished something in what you do and actually get satisfaction from it?  Is it a positive thing for others?  God has a unique purpose for your life.  If you have those days where you wonder why you are here and what you should be doing, maybe it’s time to have a little talk with Jesus.  Listen to the little nudges that come your way if you feel you need to call someone or maybe do something for someone.

There is a big, hurting world out there and so many who want someone to care that they exist.  There are so many ministries available.  Sometimes, it’s as simple as taking the neighbor’s child, just to give them a break, or even taking them to church, it might be the first opportunity they have.  Invite the parents to come along!

You are unique, you are special!  There is no one else like you!  God loves you beyond measure!

If You’re Breathing, You Have a Purpose

By Rick Warren

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

God didn’t create anything without a purpose. If you’re breathing, you have a purpose. In Christ, you have something to offer the world.

When God made you, he wired you in a certain way and uniquely shaped you for a contribution. Nobody has been you in the past or will be you in the future. God doesn’t create clones or copies. Even identical twins are different in thousands of ways.

Your thumbprint, voice, footprint, heartbeat, and eyes are unique. You’re not one in a million. You’re one in trillions. God custom-made you. And he wants you to be you.

You may have heard all your life, “Why can’t you be more like [your brother or sister or friend]?” But if God hadn’t wanted you to be you, then you wouldn’t exist.

And, yet, you may spend your life trying to be somebody you’re not. When you do that, you miss your whole purpose.

God did not make you and put you here on this planet just to breathe air, take up space, and die. If you’re here, there’s a contribution that only you can make.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT).

You are God’s masterpiece. Before you were born, God planned the good things he wanted you to do with your life. In other words, he gave you a ministry.

Everybody has a ministry. You can find your ministry by looking at how God shaped you. He gave you unique spiritual gifts, abilities, and experiences to help other people.

When you see how you are shaped and use that shape to bless others, then you will find your ministry. And you will find your purpose.

The Meaning of Proverbs 17:6 – On the Beauty of Grandchildren

Happy Monday!

I missed Grandparent’s Day with this article but as a grandparent, and knowing many of you are too, I felt the need to use it anyway.

My grandchildren are most definitely my crown, but it isn’t always all beauty and joy.  Sometimes, there is heartbreak and pain involved.  Sometimes, there is some anger and hurt.  Always though, there is a tremendous love.  These little humans come into our lives and you become a part of them, either by blood or by love.  They will carry little pieces of you in their lives.  Hopefully, pieces filled with your love and them knowing your love for Christ.

I wonder about the unbearable pain and hurt that so many parents and grandparents are suffering from today.  There are young people on the streets committing all kinds of atrocities, even murder.  Along the way, they are attempting to kill the spirit of Godliness and love in America.  Their platform is based on lies, deceit and evil.

My heart breaks for these young people, parents and grandparents.  Have they ever known the love of God?  Have they ever known love at all?  Was there never anyone in their lives that could have influenced them in a positive way, or did they just not listen.

We need to pray.  Pray for our children and grandchildren.  Then pray for all of those children and grandchildren that have no one to pray for them.  Pray the right person will come along to plant the seed of God’s love, grace, mercy and forgiveness.  Just PRAY!   James 5:16 says “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”

I’m praying for a peace that surpasses all understanding, for each and every one of you.

The Meaning of Proverbs 17:6 – On the Beauty of Grandchildren

Source: https://dailyverse.knowing-jesus.com/proverbs-17-6

Grandchildren are the crown of old men, And the glory of sons is their fathers.

There is a dignity and grace that accompanies a godly man into his old age, and one of the joys of being in one’s twilight years is to have grandchildren. To see one’s children’s children born into this world and have an opportunity to interact with them and instruct them in godly living.

From eternity to eternity the Lord’s faithful love is toward those that fear Him, and His righteousness is toward children’s children.  No surprise that grandchildren are described in this verse as being a coronet on the head of an old man. Children’s children are the crown of old men and the glory of sons is their fathers.

From the beginning God ordained that a man should leave his father and mother and cleave to his own wife, and they should become one flesh. God established the intimacy of family life, where father and mother bring up their sons and daughters in the fear and reverence of the Lord, and a godly man who fulfils his roles and responsibilities as God designed, becomes the praise and glory of his children and grandchildren.

In Psalm 127 we read that sons are a heritage from the Lord and children are a reward. Sons and daughters born to a young couple are truly a gift from God, and those that are delivered during one’s youth are described in Scripture as arrows in a warrior’s hand. Happy is the man who has filled his quiver with them.

The Bible reminds us that old men of God, who have the joy of sons and daughters, will never be put to shame when they speak with their enemies at the city gate. Their wives will be described as a fruitful vine in their homes, and their sons will be like young olive trees around their table.

Not only are grandchildren ‘the crown of an old man’, but he is also ‘the glory of his sons’. There is much in Scripture that describes the status and honor that is afforded older men. And there is much that instructs them in their duty towards their children and grandchildren.

Older men are to take the responsibility to instruct their sons and daughters in the way to go. They are to be constantly on guard and diligently watch themselves and their offspring, and they are to teach the Word of God to their children and grandchildren.

Older men are to be self-controlled, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. When older men live as God instructed and bring up their children in the way they should go, they are honored by their children, become the glory of their sons and are blessed with grandchildren – who become their crowning glory.

A good man leaves an inheritance to his grandchildren, and the legacy of a godly grandfather should have eternal consequences in the lives of later generations. He should instruct his sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters in the things of the Lord, so they come to a saving faith in Christ – mature in the faith, grow in grace and in a knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

My Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for putting us in families and for the roles and responsibilities You ordained within the family unit. We recognize the responsibility on fathers, mothers and grandparents in bringing up their children and grandchildren in the fear of the Lord. Thank You for the godly father, mothers, men and women you have placed in each of our lives and I pray that we may become the godly parents and grandparents you desire in each family unit. We pray Your blessing on the men of our nation – the father and grandfathers of our land, and pray that each one would take the responsibilities of training up their sons and daughters in the way they should go, so that each becomes a crown of glory in their old age and are praised and honored by their children. This we ask in Jesus’ name, AMEN.

The Battle Wages On

Happy Monday!

Sometimes, I am amazed that I have been privileged to meet some of the people I know. Their character and strength never cease to amaze me. Jami Williams is one of those people.

I had saved this article from the local paper back in Missouri. I was blessed to work with Jami for a while and was always very impressed with her writing skills.

As I got to know her better, I learned about some struggles she had gone through and even got to meet her sweet mother.

Jami was the mother to a baby boy who was born very early and very small. He required a tremendous amount of special care and she did everything she could to help him thrive, and thrive he did! She was a strong, determined young mother who knew the value of hard work. She was a talented writer (and now author), photographer and anything else she needed to be!  At that time, she had no idea of all that was still ahead of her.

Jami went on to get her teaching degree, started teaching at the local high school, earning the respect and love of all of her students.

And then it began.

Her mother was diagnosed with cancer and ten days later was gone. Her brother’s cancer returned and she and her husband were involved in an accident that still continues to haunt their health and life. She still goes on.

Her struggle continues and the unseen enemy, cancer, continues its battle with her brother.

I am blessed to know Jami and pray that, if needed, I can be that strong. When I came across this article again, I thought maybe someone else could be encouraged, not by her struggles and pain, but her strength and joy that she always digs up from the deepest depths of her soul.

There are many others who have tremendous stories and I admire them so much. One common trait with all of them is their faith. Faith never fails.

Please pray for Jami and her family.  I pray for Jami and all the others that I know have been, or are, struggling. I pray for you too.

The battle wages on: A Relay for Life caregiver tells her story

Mexico Ledger – September, 2018 (By Jami Williams)

Caregiver Jami Williams gave a powerful speech Sunday at the 21st annual Relay For Life of Audrain County, which was held under the theme of “celebrating super heroes.”

Here are portions of her speech, which told of the lessons she and her family have learned through their experiences with cancer. She offers a message to all those caregivers out there acting as the “sidekick” to the “super hero” survivors for whom they care.

“I didn’t get a chance to be a caregiver for my mother. She went into the hospital, was diagnosed, and 10 days later, she was gone. I never thought that I would have to be a caregiver again. My brother had been cured, eight years cancer-free. I remember the exact moment I knew that my brother’s cancer was back. And I knew that it was going to be bad. I was right.

This past summer, cancer took. Cancer did not sneak into our lives. Cancer landed like Thor and his hammer smack dab in the middle of our lives. Cancer took all of the soft tissue in my brother’s pelvis. Cancer took away his ability to sit down for two months. Cancer took, and it is still taking. And it would be really simple, actually it would be expected, for me to talk, as a caregiver, about how angry that taking makes me.

But I can’t talk about it, because I can’t be angry. I refuse to be angry. I am too busy being grateful for every moment that I still have with him. So, I want to talk about how much cancer is giving to me, as a caregiver.

hank you, cancer, for teaching me to let go of things I cannot control. Thank you, cancer, for showing me that my brother truly understands the value of life and through having the opportunity to observe that, having more value in my life. Thank you for making me patient, making me brave…

You can keep all of the time that you have taken, but we won’t let you have one more moment. You see, as a caregiver, I stand between you and my brother, and as a caregiver, like all caregivers, I am formidable. I am relentless. I have all of the power over you, cancer, because I forgive you. I forgive you for being a weak monster. That means you have nothing to hold over us, nothing [with which] to manipulate me. See, as a caregiver, I am a lioness, I am the stone of David, and you won’t survive this hit…

You may comfort yourself with the understanding that your biological makeup will possibly someday allow you to have my brother’s life. But you will never take away his ability to live, to live now while he survives and to live on in my memory. Because I am the caregiver, the sidekick to the superhero, my brother.

So, take your rightful place as the villain, as the nemesis, as the bad guy. And let us do battle…

To the caregivers, the sidekicks to these super heroes, it is your job to forgive cancer, because your energies are better used elsewhere. We must forgive, for that is the source of our power to care for, to love, to be strong, to do battle. So, cancer, I forgive you, but you will never be forgotten. I will pursue you and never let it end. I will chase you down, not to avenge what you have taken, but to prevent you from taking more. And if you should take my hero, then woe be unto you, for I will absorb his strength, round up those who are like me, and we will shake the earth together until you are nothing but something that used to happen to people.”

I Choose…

Happy Monday!

If it hasn’t started that way, CHOOSE to make it better.  I realize I am not walking in your shoes today, only you can do that.  Only you can feel your pain, your hurts and your disappointments.  Let me ask you a question though.  Which feels better?  To focus on all that is wrong in your life or all that is good.  I ask this because that is where I find myself so often.

I am currently reading the book When God Whispers Your Name by Max Lucado.  His writing soothes my soul and sometimes I just need a different perspective.  There is so much in this little book that I love but a particular chapter just grabbed hold of me and wouldn’t let go.  What do you choose?

When it comes down to it, God holds me in His hands.  He holds my past, my present and my future.  He is in control and I am His.  He whispers my name.  Am I listening?  Are you?

From When God Whispers Your Name – Max Lucado

“It’s quiet.  It’s early.  My coffee is hot.  The sky is still black.  The world is still asleep.  The day is coming.

In a few moments the day will arrive. It will roar down the track with the rising of sun. The stillness of the dawn will be exchanged for the noise of the day. The calm of solitude will be replaced by the pounding pace of the human race.  The refuge of the early morning will be invaded by decisions to be made and deadlines to be met.

For the next twelve hours I will be exposed to the day’s demands. It is now that I must make a choice. Because of Calvary, I’m free to choose.  And so, I choose.

I choose love . . .

No occasion justifies hatred; no injustice warrants bitterness.  I choose love.  Today I will love God and what God loves.

I choose joy . . .

I will invite my God to be the God of circumstance.  I will refuse the temptation to be cynical . . .  the tool of the lazy thinker.  I will refuse to see people as anything less than human beings, created by God.  I will refuse to see any problem as anything less than an opportunity to see God.

I choose peace . . .

I will live forgiven. I will forgive so that I may live.

I choose patience . . .

I will overlook the inconveniences of the world.  Instead of cursing the one who takes my place, I’ll invite him to do so.  Rather than complain that the wait is too long, I will thank God for a moment to pray.  Instead of clinching my fist at new assignments, I will face them with joy and courage.

I choose kindness . . .

I will be kind to the poor, for they are alone.  Kind to the rich, for they are afraid.  And kind to the unkind, for such is how God has treated me.

I choose goodness . . .

I will go without a dollar before I take a dishonest one. I will be overlooked before I will boast.  I will confess before I will accuse.   I choose goodness.

I choose faithfulness . . .

Today I will keep my promises. My debtors will not regret their trust.  My associates will not question my word. My wife will not question my love. And my children will never fear that their father will not come home.

I choose gentleness . . .

Nothing is won by force.  I choose to be gentle.  If I raise my voice may it be only in praise.  If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer.  If I make a demand, may it be only of myself.

I choose self-control . . .

I am a spiritual being. After this body is dead, my spirit will soar.  I refuse to let what will rot, rule the eternal. I choose self-control.  I will be drunk only by joy.  I will be impassioned only by my faith.  I will be influenced only by God.  I will be taught only by Christ. I choose self-control.

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. To these I commit my day.  If I succeed, I will give thanks.  If I fail, I will seek his grace.  And then, when this day is done, I will place my head on my pillow and rest.”

Galatians 5:22-23 The Message (MSG)

But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity.  We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.

Legalism is helpless in bringing this about; it only gets in the way.  Among those who belong to Christ, everything connected with getting our own way and mindlessly responding to what everyone else calls necessities is killed off for good—crucified.

Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

The Ten Commandments

Happy Monday!

I remember, as a child, going to Sunday School.  Quite often, they used the flannel board with the velcro stick on’s for illustration.  One of the very first ones that I remember is the Ten Commandments.  We would usually study one each week, starting with reading the scripture, then explaining what it meant.  It was basic, because we were just kids and hadn’t learned this formally yet.

I look around at the world we are living in today and think that maybe we need some flannel boards and velcro stick ons.  I look around and can’t help but think that maybe we need to go back to the very basics, beginning with the Ten Commandments.  I don’t know if so many have never heard them, or just choose to ignore them.

On any given day, I can look around and either personally witness, or read or hear about every single commandment being broken over and over again.  They are not just broken but shattered into shards on the ground, over and over again.

How God must grieve!  Grieve that the very children He individually planned and created, are ignoring, abusing and taunting the few rules that would give us a peaceful, Godly and loving society.  Rules that would honor and glorify Him.  He asks for so little, yet gives so much.  And this isn’t the first time.  We live in a sinful world.  We are sinners and it is only through the grace of God that we are saved.

I wonder every day, will this be the day, Lord?  I know He must get so tired of watching  this every single day.  But I also know there is nothing He hasn’t seen before.  It is us that are seeing so much for the first time.  I pray for God’s grace every day.

Pray Unceasingly,

Lois
