God’s Secret To A Total Makeover

I’m not always very open-minded when it comes to change.  It took me a long time to get the way I am and now I have to change??  The truth is, getting “the way I am now” was a process of changing all through the years.  I like to think I’ve changed for the better.  I know my heart has.

Life is a continuous process of growing and maturing mentally, emotionally and spiritually.  I tell myself quite often that at my age, I really don’t need to “learn” anything new, and then a new challenge presents itself….  I learn more about God’s word and His purpose for me every day.  I really hope I always will because I will never be perfect, so there is always room for improvement and I believe that’s what God wants.  Everyday should be a challenge in how to serve Him better and how to be better stewards of what He has given us.

Are you being “transformed by the renewing of your mind”?

God’s Secret To A Total Makeover

RICK WARREN

“Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2 (NIV)

Change is great on the outside, but real change comes from the inside out. It’s more than cosmetic; it’s more than a skinnier version of the same old you. God wants you to be made new from the inside out – spirit, soul, and body.

God puts them in that order in his Word: “May the God who gives us peace make you holy in every way and keep your whole being – spirit, soul, and body – free from every fault at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Thessalonians 5:23 TEV).

God knows that real change comes from the inside. It’s great’s to clean out the fridge and get rid of the junk food in the pantry.  But what about the junk food in your head?   The old lies, the empty values, the false perceptions? Ephesians 4:23 says, “Be made new in the attitude of your minds” (NIV).

There are two words in today’s verse from Romans 12 that I want to focus on –

Conform. According to the dictionary, conform means to “make or become the same” or “to behave in a conventional way by accepting without question the customs, traditions and prevailing opinions of others.” How often do we do this? We think, “Oh everybody else is doing it so it must be okay.” But God says, “Don’t conform to the ways of this world. Stop and think about what you’re doing.”

Transform. Transform means “to change the condition, function, nature, character or personality” of something. It means changing from the inside out. In Romans 12, Paul says to transform yourself not by trying to be like the rest of the world, but by renewing your mind, by changing the way you think.

God wants a new you who not only looks different, but who lives and thinks and speaks and acts differently. He wants a new you who has taken a 180-degree turn and is headed in a new direction, no longer pursuing an old way of life, no longer trying to conform and fit in and be like everybody else. He wants a new you who is being transformed by the renewing of your mind – a new you who is being transformed into the likeness of Christ.

Godly Goals Require Faith

In The Daniel Plan, one of our 5 Essentials is Faith.  It SOUNDS really simple, right?  But, how then, does our life get all turned around sometimes and you don’t know where to turn?  Or worse yet, you feel you have NOWHERE to turn! Ironically, God is always there waiting for you to turn to Him.

It is easy to get so involved, so focused on what is going on in our daily lives, that we just take our faith for granted.  Suddenly there is a serious accident, illness, marital problem or maybe just a very stressful situation and our lives seem like they are coming unraveled.  We may get depressed, become angry (all too often with God) or we might even turn to something that gives us comfort or escape.  In an ideal world, that something would be God, but unless we have a deep seated Faith, we may turn to destructive measures like an extramarital affair, alcohol, drugs or food.

In The Daniel Plan, we try to define food as fortification for our bodies, not our emotions, yet food is one of the main things we turn to in a stressful situation.  We strive daily to rely on the other 4 Essentials; Focus, Fitness, Friends and FAITH for comfort and Food for our physical need.  It is a daily exercise to prove to ourselves, and others, that we can eat well and eat healthy at the same time.  By building our Faith, we learn to rely on God when we are weak AND strong.

So… set your goals, but set GODLY goals.  Set them to please HIM, not a perceived image you may have in your mind.  You are a child of the King, so place your faith in the hands of the father.

 Godly Goals Require Faith

“Without faith it is impossible to please God.” Hebrews 11:6a (NIV)

Godly goals are set through faith. The Bible says, “Without faith, it is impossible to please God”
(Hebrews 11:6a NIV).

In order to please God, you must set goals that require faith.

What does this mean? It means you must set goals that are bigger than ones you can reach on your own.

For instance, I want you to set a health goal for this year. As I’ve said, if you don’t have a health goal, then your goal is to stay the same or get worse. To move forward and get healthier, you must set a health goal.

Let’s say you need to take off some weight. If you say, “My goal is to lose one pound,” well, you know you can do better than that. Set a goal based on what God tells you to do, and I have no doubt that will be a goal that will require you to remain dependent on Jesus.

You haven’t believed God until you’ve attempted to do something that can’t be done without his power at work in your life.

The Power to Keep Going

Grace, grace, God’s grace.

Do you sometimes have those days when you are hard put to find a reason to get out of bed?  Discouragement sets in and you just wonder why.  It is times like that when you might feel angry with God, angry with yourself, your spouse and everyone else.  I have had those days.  I’m not proud of them, but I’ve had them.  It can be hard to take a step back and assess the problem.

Addictions are one of the hardest things to deal with.  They come in many sizes and shapes.  Drugs, alcohol, pornography, sex, even food.  Some addictions can be conquered and left forever.  Others, like food, have to be dealt with on a daily basis.  No matter what it is, it is hard, and sometimes impossible, to conquer on your own.  So how do you do it?  How do you climb a mountain that is far too high?  I don’t believe you can do it on your own.  You need a power higher than your own.

There is a power that can overcome even the strongest addiction.  The hard part is turning it over to Him who has that power.  Focus on your blessings, not your problems.  Focus on the grace that our holy father has covered us with, no matter where our mind is.  It is through this grace that we are saved.  It is through this grace that no matter how many times we fail, our father loves us and forgives us.  I fail daily, and still He loves me and waits for me.  Grace, grace, God’s grace.

The Power to Keep Going

BY RICK WARREN

“God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished.”(Philippians 1:6a NLT)

The Bible tells us that God always finishes what he starts: “God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished” (Philippians 1:6a NLT). It doesn’t say, “God might finish it.” It doesn’t say, “God hopes to finish it.” It says God will finish it. What does that mean?

It means if you have really given your life to Jesus Christ, if you’ve opened yourself up to God and said, “Christ, be number one in my life,” you are going to make it to Heaven. There’s no doubt about it. Case closed. Done deal. You are going to make it across the finish line, because it doesn’t depend upon your performance; it depends upon God’s sustaining grace. The only question is how you finish the race. You know as well as I do that some people finish a race poorly, while other people finish a race well.

I don’t want you to just get into Heaven. I don’t want you to just get across the finish line. I want to help you finish the race of life well. I want you to enjoy life, the abundant life, to figure out what God made you for and then do it.

How can you be sure you’re going to finish the race of life? Because of God’s sustaining grace. God doesn’t want to just save you. He wants to sustain you through life. He wants you to make it.
What is sustaining grace?

Sustaining grace is the power to keep on going when you feel like giving up. It’s the power to do the right thing when you don’t feel like doing the right thing.

There are many pitfalls in the marathon race of life. But regardless of what you go through, no matter what you face this year, you can count on God’s sustaining grace.

“My purpose in writing is to encourage you and assure you that what you are experiencing is truly part of God’s grace for you. Stand firm in this grace” (1 Peter 5:12b).

Life’s Greatest Spiritual Secret

I was listening to Daily Audio Bible last week and the host, Brian Harding, said something that made me do a double take.  Keeping in mind that The Daily Audio Bible covers the entire Bible in a year through scripture readings, he made a very profound statement.  In my words, he said that sometimes we get so caught up with scripture that we forget the most important thing is RELATIONSHIP.  I have found this to be true lately.  I’m caught up with a Bible Study, Sunday School lessons and Sunday sermons in Revelation.  I am constantly “doing” and reading, but am I spending time in relationship?  Well, I am, but it is so easy to put my intimate relationship with Jesus closer to the back burner when I get busy.  We all have busy lives and must find a balance in all of it, but ABOVE ALL, our relationship with Jesus should be foremost in our minds.  In my case, I think it’s time to take a deep breath and go back to my early morning porch visits with the One who counts above all, Jesus Christ.  That is when I revive and revitalize and just grow in His love.  May you all revitalize your relationship and always balance that with the Word.

P.S. Our travel from Salina, KS to San Antonio, TX yesterday was one of the scariest days I can remember.  There was never any doubt though on WHOM we needed to depend.  God is good!

 Life’s Greatest Spiritual Secret

It’s Simpler Than You Think

Have you ever struggled and fretted because your life wasn’t going the way you wanted? Do you feel that way right now?

You have legitimate needs and desires. You know what would make you happy and you pray for it with all your might, asking God to help you get it. But if it doesn’t come to pass, you may feel frustrated, disappointed, even bitter.

Sometimes you do get what you want, only to discover that it doesn’t make you happy after all, just disillusioned.

Many Christians repeat this cycle their entire life, wondering what they’re doing wrong. I should know. I was one of them.

The Secret is in the ‘Doing’

A spiritual secret exists that can free you from this cycle:

Trusting God. Trusting in the Lord.

“What?” you’re asking. “That’s no secret. I’ve read that dozens of times in the Bible and heard lots of sermons on it. What does he mean, secret?”

The secret lies in putting this truth into practice, by making it such a powerful theme in your life that you view every event, every sorrow, every prayer with the unshakable conviction that God is totally, spotlessly trustworthy.

That’s where we mess up. We want to trust in anything rather than the Lord. We’ll trust in our own abilities, in our boss’s judgment of us, in our money, our doctor, even in an airline pilot. But the Lord? Well…

It’s easy to trust in things we can see. Sure, we believe in God, but to allow him to run our life? That’s asking a little too much, we think.

Disagreeing Over What Really Matters

The bottom line is that our wants may not agree with God’s wants for us.

Explore the Bible story of Joseph. Discover its meaning in your life.

After all, it’s our life, isn’t it? Shouldn’t we have the say over it? Shouldn’t we be the one who calls the shots? God gave us free will, didn’t he?

Advertising and peer pressure tell us what’s important: a high-paying career, a head-turning car, a drop-dead-gorgeous home, and a spouse or significant other who will make everyone else green with envy.

If we fall for the world’s idea of what matters, we get trapped in what I call “The Loop of Next Time.” The new car, relationship, promotion or whatever didn’t bring you the happiness you expected, so you keep searching, thinking “Maybe next time.” But it’s a loop that’s always the same, because you were created for something better, and deep down you know it.

When you finally reach the place where your head agrees with your heart, you’re still hesitant. It’s scary. Trusting in the Lord can require that you abandon everything you’ve ever believed about what brings happiness and fulfillment.

It requires that you accept the truth that God knows what’s best for you. But how do you make that leap from knowing to doing? How do you trust in the Lord instead of the world or yourself?

The Secret Behind This Secret

The secret lives within you: the Holy Spirit. Not only will he convict you of the rightness of trusting in the Lord, he’ll help you do it. It’s just too tough to do on your own.

Because the Holy Spirit knows you better than you know yourself, he’ll give you exactly what you need to make this change. He’s infinitely patient, so he’ll let you test this secret—trusting in the Lord—in little baby steps. He’ll catch you if you stumble. He’ll rejoice with you when you succeed.

As someone who has gone through cancer, the deaths of loved ones, broken relationships, and job layoffs, I can tell you that trusting in the Lord is a lifelong challenge. You never finally “arrive.” Each new crisis calls for recommitment. The good news is that the more often you see God’s loving hand working in your life, the easier this trusting becomes.

When you trust in the Lord, you’ll feel as if the weight of the world has been lifted off your shoulders. The pressure’s off you now and on God, and he can handle it perfectly.

God will make something beautiful of your life, but he needs your trust in him to do it. Are you ready? The time to start is today, right now.

In the Journey of Life, We Need Each Other!

Wow!  It almost seems like we are reliving a mini exodus lately!  Once again, that time of year has rolled around and people are heading other places every day.  Some for a few days and others for much longer.  These are friends and neighbors, people who mean something to us.  People who, even though you may not see or talk to them every day, are there for you if you need them.

There is so much to be said for a friend’s support.  Knowing that, with a simple phone call, you can have physical aid, emotional aid and a prayer system immediately!

In The Daniel Plan, friends are our “secret sauce”.  I have no doubt that with a simple phone call, whatever my need might be, someone would be helping me.  I pray each of us has that support system to lift us up and, if needed, point us UP.

Pray unceasingly.

In the Journey of Life, We Need Each Other!

BY RICK WARREN

“As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.” (Ephesians 4:16 NLT, second edition)

The Bible says in Colossians 2:6-7, “As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him” (ESV). The Bible often compares life to a walk, because you don’t just sit still in life. We are on a journey! Throughout the New Testament we’re told to walk in wisdom, in love, in light, in obedience, and in the Spirit.

But one of the key ways that God tells us to walk is this: You were never meant to walk through life alone. This has nothing to do with whether you’re single or married. Marriage does not solve the issue; community does. And you find community in your spiritual family — the Body of Christ.

Some of you say, “What’s wrong with walking alone? I like walking alone. In fact, I prefer it. I can go at my own pace. I don’t have to wait for anybody.”

You may like walking alone, but you need others to walk with you through life. Let me give you three reasons.

1. It’s safer. Have you ever had to walk through a dark alley at night or down a long road in the countryside by yourself? It can be a little scary. It’s safer to walk through life with others.

2. It’s supportive. There’s an old Zambian proverb that says, “When you run alone, you run fast. But when you run together, you run far.” Life is not a 50-yard dash; it’s a marathon! The only way you’re going to finish the race well and not burn out is by having other people involved in your life through meaningful relationships.

3. It’s smarter. You learn more by walking with others than you do by yourself. Proverbs 28:26 says, “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool.” In other words, if you’re the only one who thinks something and nobody agrees with you, you may be walking in the wrong direction. When you walk by yourself through life, you don’t have anybody to go, “We’re off the path. We’ve got to get back on the path and go in the right direction.”

Ephesians 4:16 says, “As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love” (NLT, second edition).

You’ve got to have other people in your life to help you grow into the person God made you to be. Life is about relationships. God is love, and he wants you to learn to love him and to love others. Those are the two greatest lessons in life.

10 STEPS TO BECOME DANIEL STRONG

It is so easy to forget that The Daniel Plan is not just about diet.  It is about the five essentials: Faith, Food, Focus, Fitness and Friends.  The entire plan is based on the combination of those five areas to bring about a transformation of mind, body and soul.  Each essential is very important alone, but it is when the five are merged that the change occurs.

You all know how very important friends are.  A strong support system of people that will support you AND hold you accountable.  To me, faith and focus go hand in hand.  It is through faith that I know God will honor me if I honor him and gives me the motivation to focus on my goals and my daily actions.  Again, the final two, food and fitness, work together to make us healthier and stronger.  When we are healthier and stronger, it is easier to focus and keep our faith strong!

This week’s post addresses the fitness essential.  What do you need to do to become Daniel Strong?

PRAY without ceasing!

10 STEPS TO BECOME DANIEL STRONG

By Sean Foy

Daniel Strong = “A pursuit of excellence in body, mind, and spirit for God’s glory.”

We all want to be healthy, fit and happy…but it can be challenging to achieve with our hectic lives. Follow these ten steps from Daniel Plan Fitness Coach Sean Foy to help you become Daniel Strong and make a fitness plan that will work for you. Here are Sean’s tips to help you start and stick with your fitness plan:

1. You can do it!!     The first step in reaching your health and fitness goals of an active, physically fit, Daniel Strong lifestyle, is to begin by believing that you can change. Forget about yesterday – no matter what your previous experiences or attempts to change your fitness habits in the past have been….today is a new day and with God’s help and strength you can do it – one day at a time!

2. Take Fitness Baby Steps One of the best ways to “ease” back into a regular fitness program is to “start small”. Set small realistic goals allowing you the opportunity to “fit” exercise into your daily schedule-as well as increasing your confidence as you accomplish small measurable goals.

3. Select exercises you enjoy I get asked all the time, “What is the best exercise to help me lose weight, get in shape or improve my health? And my answer is always the same –  “The best exercise to help you get fit and stay fit is THE ONE YOU WILL DO!” In other words, choose activities you enjoy – not exercises you find to be boring or drudgery.  Begin with exercises or movements which bring a smile to your face. Whatever brings joy to your heart and soul, you are much more apt to continue.

4. Get in touch with your “fitness personality”… Ask yourself: Do I like to exercise outside, inside, on machines, with others or by myself? Do I like to do other activities when exercising such as reading, praying, worshiping, watching TV, and listening to music? Do I prefer exercising at home or at a gym? Do I like to compete when I exercise (e.g. playing a sport or training for an event)? By asking yourself these questions, you’ll get a better sense of what your “fitness personality” is all about.

5. Forgive!! Be aware of statements that produce self-blame, shame or guilt. “Oh, there you go again missed another exercise session!!” or “You will never change!” Typically, self-blame can spiral into a demoralizing way of thinking that can sabotage even your best efforts. If you miss an exercise session or were inactive for a short period of time, which will happen, don’t beat yourself up! Simply assess your lifestyle at the time and plan to get back into your new Daniel Strong active lifestyle. Maintaining an active healthy lifestyle requires patience, persistence and most importantly forgiveness.

You don’t have to be perfect to be physically fit and Daniel Strong!

6. Take Charge!!“Responsibility can be defined as the ability to choose your response”. Individuals who begin and maintain a Daniel Strong lifestyle recognize their ability and the freedom to choose their response in any situation. But remember, taking personal responsibility for your health and fitness does not imply that you have to do it alone. In fact, taking responsibility for your health and fitness should encourage you to proactively build a support team of good friends around you to encourage, assist and support you along your journey.

7. Plan your exercise before your week begins good exercise habits happen because we make them happen. Take a few minutes before your week begins and plan out your week. Schedule “non-negotiable” appointments with yourself – jotting down on your phone or calendar the exact day and time you are committing to move your body. Soon enough, your regular exercise program will be something you cherish, protect and look forward to!

8.  Increase your training slowly to help your body become Daniel Strong, slowly and incrementally begin to increase your training by 5-10% every week or every other week, based upon how you are feeling. Progression of your exercise routine is the key to getting into Daniel Strong shape. There are a number of ways to progress your workout such as:

– Changing the number of repetitions

– Increasing the duration of exercise

– Increase the speed of exercise

– Increase the number of exercises performed

– Increase the number of sets performed

– Increase the intensity of exercise-increase the elevation, RPM’s revolutions per minute.

– Changing equipment or apparatus

– Decreasing your rest interval

– Change your position

– Going from bilateral to unilateral –training one arm or leg at a time vs. both at the same time

– Add a balance factor-when exercising such as using a ball, BOSU or foam roller.

9. Track your progress Use a small notebook or your mobile device to keep track of your exercise duration, number of exercises, sets, repetitions and weight completed. Also, make note of how you feel before during and after your activities or workouts. If you want to simplify your tracking, check off the day you completed your exercise-and give yourself a pat on the back!

10. Fitness and Friends: Get a workout buddy who is at your level! Getting back into shape and becoming Daniel Strong is always easier with a friend who is at a similar or higher fitness level to you. Enlist the help of friends, family members (even your dog) who you know will be consistent and faithful to exercise with you….this will help you progress together as well as encourage you and keep you accountable.

It doesn’t matter where you begin – what matters is taking that first step and discovering the exercise you enjoy. Start small and make it a regular part of your life.
Just remember to take it one step at a time and win today!

A Mighty Prayer

As I looked at the regular Daniel Plan devotions this morning, all I kept thinking was “I’ve got nothing.”  I base the posts on what is on my heart that day and none of the DP ones seemed to fit at all today.

The thing that kept coming to my mind was just how great our God really is!  I look at the news Jean received this week-end and stand in awe.  Months have gone by with just a little early chemo and yet, there is no sign of cancer!  After many weeks, her ankle is repaired and she is on the mend!  How great is our God!!

Sometimes, I think we tend to put God in a safe little box.  He sets on a shelf until we need him or he just happens to come to mind.  We pray, but we put limits on his power…  Well, I think this week-end was just another reminder that God is CAPABLE of whatever we need.  If we put a limit on what we expect of him or a limit on our faith that he can accomplish anything, then our answers may come with limits.  But I believe if we pray boldly AND according to God’s perfect will, our answers can be unlimited and boundless!  I also know that his answer may not quite match up with what I was expecting, but his answer is always better, even if we don’t understand at the time.  How great is our God!

My prayer all along, as hopefully yours has been too, that according to God’s perfect will, that there be total healing.  That there be no sign of cancer.  And today I pray that I never be tempted to limit our awesome God, or put him up on a shelf in a box.

James 5:16 says “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.  The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”  It doesn’t say pray so you can feel a little better, it says “so that you may be HEALED”!  Let’s throw the box away and give our almighty God the glory and thanks that he so richly deserves!

Pray for Jean and Tom, also pray for Rod, Jackie, King, Janet, Jody and so many others who need to feel his healing hand!

You can also post prayer requests on the web site!

In His light,

Lois

Think Clearly About What You Eat

The Daniel Plan was based on Daniel refusing to eat the rich foods of the king’s court.  Despite the concern for his life, the guard allowed him to eat clean food, vegetables, for ten days.  At the end of the ten days, he looked healthier and stronger than those who ate the food of the royal court.

There are so many things that are really just what we make it.  There is no magic formula, no magic pill, no hocus pocus to the plan.  It is what we make it.  It can be elaborate menus or it can be plain, simple, healthy foods like our grandparents used to prepare.  Good, lean protein, clean vegetables and fruits, plus nuts, seeds and whole grains are the base of the entire plan.

I grew up on a lot of wild game and fish in my early years.  We were asset poor and family rich and had no idea that the way we were eating was the best way to eat!  Beans were another staple of our diet (Mom was nominated as 4-H cooking leader once because she had the reputation for the best beans in the county! Haha)  and when meat wasn’t available, it was beans and cornbread.  We always had a garden and something to eat.  To this day, I don’t feel like we were deprived of anything that was important.  My seven brothers and sisters and I all survived the measles, chicken pox, whooping cough and didn’t get sick very often.  As I got older, dad’s income increased with a new job and different location.  Our diet’s evolved also.  There were more convenience foods, richer foods and fast food.  Our girth increased and our health declined.  Welcome progress.  With that came the “health” craze.  Fat free, sugar free and preservatives.  Instead of getting thinner, we have gotten heavier and our health has declined significantly.  With every ingredient they took out, they added several chemicals and preservatives to make up for it.  Welcome to progress.

Maybe it’s time to go back to the basics.  Good, clean, simple food that nourishes us and satisfies us.  Maybe it’s time for US to take charge of our own bodies again and reduce the need for the 3rd party interests like doctors and insurance.  Please don’t misunderstand, I absolutely feel we need doctors and insurance, but ultimately, I believe I am responsible for much of the vulnerability my body has.  I can never control it all, but I can reduce the negative influences and be a better steward of what God has put in my charge.  I try to look at it as a partnership.  God provided the assets and, with His help, allows me to manage them, and that includes thinking clearly about what I eat.

Jean has a big week this week.  Appointments tomorrow for her ankle and Friday for the cancer.  I hope you will be inspired to pray as I am.

Pray for Jean.

 In His light,

Lois

Think Clearly About What You Eat

BY RICK WARREN

“‘Test us for ten days,’ he said. ‘Give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare us with the young men who are eating the food of the royal court, and base your decision on how we look.’ [The guard] agreed to let them try it for ten days. When the time was up, they looked healthier and stronger than all those who had been eating the royal food.”

(Daniel 1:12-15 TEV)

When Daniel refused to become unclean by eating the food of King Nebuchadnezzar’s court, he made a deal with the guard: “‘Test us for ten days,’ he said. ‘Give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare us with the young men who are eating the food of the royal court, and base your decision on how we look.’ [The guard] agreed to let them try it for ten days. When the time was up, they looked healthier and stronger than all those who had been eating the royal food” (Daniel 1:12-15 TEV).

Daniel didn’t just eat haphazardly, accepting whatever was placed in front of him. He was intentional about what he ate.

When you think clearly about what you eat, God empowers you to continue to make good choices. Clear thinking leads to self-control.

By thinking ahead of time, you can prepare so that you won’t have a “food emergency.” This enables you to eat healthful snacks that you packed ahead of time, and you won’t crash in the afternoon because you ate a greasy fast-food lunch.

Instead, you’ll be on top of your game, ready to do whatever it is that God calls you to do. Being mindful and conscious, thinking clearly, and exercising self-control, you can become Daniel Strong.

 Talk It Over

Share three things you can do to think clearly and prepare in order to avoid a food emergency.

What time of day are you most likely to have a “food emergency”?

How can you prepare for these times when you are vulnerable?

What changes do you notice in yourself when you practice mindful and intentional eating?

Why Focusing on Calories Misses the Bigger Picture for Your Weight and Health

By Mark Hyman, MD

How much you eat matters, but the quality of the food we put into our bodies matters more because it drives our gene function, metabolism, and health.

Rather than subscribing to the antiquated calories in/calories out model for weight loss and good health, focus on powerful, gene-altering, whole, real, fresh food that you cook yourself can rapidly change your biology. You will lose weight by getting your systems in balance, not by starving yourself.

Studies Show Quality Matters More

Let me share a remarkable study1 that shows how quickly and powerfully the quality of the food you eat affects your genes, independent of calories, carbs, protein, fat, or fiber.

This study divided people with pre-diabetes into two groups. Each group consumed the same amount of calories, with equivalent amounts of protein, fat, carbohydrates, and fiber, for 12 weeks.

The only difference was one group ate whole-kernel rye bread and rye pasta; whereas, the other group ate oats, wheat, and potatoes as its carbohydrate source.

After 12 weeks, the researchers performed a subcutaneous fat biopsy, looked at gene expression, and gave participants a glucose challenge to assess how their blood sugar and insulin were affected by these dietary changes.

Remarkably, people in the group that ate rye had smarter, smaller fat cells and were more insulin-sensitive. Information contained in the rye – a phytonutrient called lignans – switched on diabesity-reversing genes. These genes were switched on regardless of calories or grams of carbs eaten.

Equally amazing, dozens of genes that had made participants fat and diabetic were turned off, and dozens of genes that would help them become healthy and thin were turned on.

On the other hand, 62 genes that promote diabesity were turned on in the group that ate oats, wheat, and potatoes. That led to increased stress molecules, increased inflammation, and increased oxidative stress or free radicals.

Put another way, it didn’t matter how many calories or grams of carbs these groups ate; it was the kind of carbs that was important.

This study, among many similar ones, proves food is not just calories. Food is information. If you want to turn off the genes that lead to diabesity and turn on the genes that lead to health, focus on the quality and type of food you eat, not necessarily the number of calories you consume or the ratio of protein to fat to carbohydrate in your diet.

Broccoli vs. Soda

To provide a practical illustration that disproves the calorie-is-a-calorie myth, let’s look at the hormone effects of 750 calories of soda versus 750 calories of broccoli.

We all intuitively know that equal caloric amounts of soda and broccoli can’t be the same nutritionally. In fact, the food interacts with your biology, a complex adaptive system that instantly transforms every bite.

First, let’s look at soda. A 7-Eleven’s Double Gulp has 750 calories, which is 100 percent sugar with 186 grams, or 46 teaspoons, of sugar.

Your gut quickly absorbs the fiber-free sugars in the soda as fructose and glucose. The glucose spikes your blood sugar, starting a domino effect of high insulin and a cascade of hormonal responses that kicks bad biochemistry into gear.

The high insulin increases storage of belly fat, increases inflammation, raises triglycerides and lowers HDL, and raises blood pressure.

In men, high insulin lowers testosterone. In women, high insulin and lack of fiber causes an oversupply of estrogens—often called estrogen dominance, which refers to abnormal recycling of estrogens in the body—and contributes to infertility and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).Now we have high insulin and sex hormone imbalances.

Insulin’s effect on your brain chemistry increases your appetite. Insulin blocks leptin, your appetite-control hormone. You become more leptin resistant, so the brain never gets the “I’m full” signal. Instead, it thinks you are starving. Your pleasure-based reward center is triggered, driving you to consume more sugar and fueling your addiction.

Fructose makes things worse. It goes right to your liver, where it starts manufacturing fat, which triggers more insulin resistance and causes chronically elevated blood insulin levels, driving your body to store everything you eat as dangerous belly fat. You also get a fatty liver, which generates more inflammation. Chronic inflammation causes more weight gain and diabesity.

Stress worsens insulin’s vicious cycle. When you perceive a lot of stress in your life, you produce excess cortisol, which then makes you crave more sugar. Excess cortisol can slow down thyroid hormone function.

Additionally, soda contains no fiber, vitamins, minerals, or phytonutrients to help you process the calories you are consuming. These are “empty” calories devoid of any nutritional value.  Your body doesn’t register soda as food, so you eat more all day long. Plus, your taste buds get hijacked, so anything that is not super-sweet doesn’t taste very good to you.

Now let’s look at the 750 calories of broccoli. As with soda, these calories are made up primarily (although not entirely) of carbs. Let’s clarify just what that means, because the varying characteristics of carbs will factor significantly into the contrast I’m about to illustrate.

Carbs are plant-based compounds comprised of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. They come in many varieties, but they are all technically sugars or starches, which convert to sugar in the body.

The important difference is in how they affect your blood sugar. High-fiber, low-sugar carbs such as broccoli are slowly digested and don’t lead to blood sugar and insulin spikes, while table sugar and bread are quickly digested carbs that spike your blood sugar.

Therein lies the difference. Slow carbs like broccoli heal rather than harm.

Those 750 calories of broccoli make up 21 cups and contain 67 grams of fiber. The average American consumes only 10 to 15 grams of fiber a day. Remember that fiber helps you get rid of bad estrogens. Broccoli is 23 percent protein, 9 percent fat, and 68 percent carbs (or 510 calories from carbs). The “sugar” in 21 cups of broccoli is the equivalent of only 1.5 teaspoons; the rest of the carbs are the low-glycemic type found in all non-starchy vegetables, which are very slowly absorbed.

However, you wouldn’t be able to eat 21 cups of broccoli, because it wouldn’t fit in your stomach. Assuming you could, what would happen? A serving that large would contain so much fiber that very few of the calories would actually get absorbed. Those that did would get absorbed very slowly.

There’d be no blood sugar or insulin spike, no fatty liver, and no hormonal chaos. Your stomach would distend (which it doesn’t with soda; bloat from carbonation doesn’t count!), sending signals to your brain that you were full. There would be no triggering of the addiction reward center in the brain.

You’d also get many extra benefits that optimize metabolism, lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and boost detoxification. The phytonutrients in broccoli (glucosinolates) boost your liver’s ability to detoxify environmental chemicals, and the flavonoid kaempferol is a powerful anti-inflammatory.

Broccoli also contains high levels of vitamin C and folate, which protect against cancer and heart disease. The glucosinolates and sulphorophanes in broccoli change the expression of your genes to help balance your sex hormones, reducing breast and other cancers.

My point is, all calories are NOT created equal. The same number of calories from different types of food can have very different biological effects.

10 Strategies to Focus on Quality, not Quantity:

The most important thing you can do to heal your body is focus on food quality. Americans spend less than 10 percent of their income on food, while Europeans spend about 20 percent.

Quality matters. It is more important than quantity when it comes to calories. If you focus on quality, not quantity, you will feel satisfied while naturally avoiding cravings and attraction to food that won’t nourish you. Here are 10 ways to do that:

Avoid highly processed, factory-manufactured Frankenfoods. Choose fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, and lean animal protein such as fish, chicken, and eggs.

Clean up your diet. Look for animal products that are pasture-raised, grass-fed, and antibiotic-, hormone-, and pesticide-free. Go on a low-mercury diet by sticking with small, wild, or sustainably farmed fish.

Go organic. Pesticides and chemical fertilizers poison your metabolism, your thyroid, your sex hormones, and our planet. Buy as much organic food as your budget allows. Refer to the Dirty Dozen list for top offenders and the Clean 15 at ewg.org.

Stay local. Seasonal, local foods you find at farmers’ markets or community-supported agriculture projects (CSAs) are healthier, taste better, are typically sustainably grown, and help you recognize the intimate relationship between the ecosystem of your body and the broader ecosystem in which we all live.

Eat a low-glycemic load. Focus on more protein and fats, including nuts (not peanuts), seeds (flax, chia, hemp, sesame, pumpkin), coconut, avocados, sardines, and olive oil.

Eat the right fats. Steer clear of vegetable oils, including soybean oil, which now comprises about 10 percent of our calories. Focus instead on omega 3 fats, nuts, coconut, avocados, and yes, even saturated fat from grass-fed or sustainably raised animals.

Eat mostly plants. Plants should form 75 percent of your diet and your plate. I usually make two to three vegetable dishes per meal.

Avoid dairy. Dairy is great for growing calves into cows, but not for humans. Try organic goat or sheep products, but only as a treat.

Avoid gluten. Most is from Franken Wheat, so look for heirloom wheat (Einkorn). If you are not gluten sensitive, then consider it an occasional treat.

Moderate alcohol and caffeine. Switch from coffee to green tea, and keep your alcohol intake to three glasses a week if you drink.

Pumpkin Seed Clusters – No Bake

½ cup almond butter

½ cup honey

¼ – 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper, per taste

½ teaspoon kosher salt

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

1 cup toasted pumpkin seeds

2 cups oats, preferably old fashioned, not quick

Line a rimmed pan with parchment or waxed paper.  In a medium saucepan, over medium heat, combine the almond butter, honey, cayenne, salt and cocoa powder.  Bring to a simmer and cook for 2 minutes.  Remove from heat and add pumpkin seeds and oats.  Stir well to combine  then transfer to the pan.  Using 2 spoons, separate mixture into small clusters. Set aside to cool.  All that being said,  my new way is to use mini muffin pans!  I just made small balls, then mashed in the muffin cup.  Work quickly before the mix cools.  This made 1 full muffin tin, plus part of another!
