Finding the Courage to Change

Happy Monday!

Joshua 1:6 says “Be strong and courageous.”  How’s that working for you?

Oh, I have strong and courageous days and can flex my muscles with the best of them.  Sometimes, I just have strong and courageous moments, so fleeting that I almost miss them.  Now and then, I’m not strong or courageous at all.  I’m just plain weak and scared.

The beauty of all of that is that even when I am weak and scared, I have someone to carry me through those times until I feel strong and courageous again.  And so do you.

We don’t have to lean on our power only.  God has our back with a power that is so much more powerful than we can even comprehend.

So!  Be strong and courageous!  And when you can’t, fall on your knees and let the all powerful Father carry you until you can again!

Pray Unceasingly!!

Finding the Courage to Change

The Daniel Plan

Be strong and courageous. —Joshua 1:6 NIV

God can change your life in ways you haven’t dared to dream of.  Pastor Rick says, “He specializes in miracle makeovers.”

Try to imagine what good changes could happen in your life if you depended on God’s infinite power instead of your own willpower. The key to deep and lasting change isn’t trying harder. It’s relaxing into “the unforced rhythms of grace” (Matthew 11:29 MSG).

Effort is necessary, but it’s effort fueled by the power of God’s Holy Spirit. The Bible says, “Be energetic in your life of salvation, reverent and sensitive before God. That energy is God’s energy, an energy deep within you, God himself willing and working at what will give him the most pleasure” (Philippians 2:12-13 MSG).

God loves you so much that he freely gives his power to work in your life. He wants to be the one who is shown to be victorious. That’s why he works so powerfully in the lives of weak and humble people.

Trusting in God’s power will give you courage to face whatever life brings you. For what do you need his power today?

Food for Thought: In a remarkable, grace-filled exchange, you can bring all of your weaknesses to God and receive from him the power to be strong and courageous.

Is Stress Damaging Your Health?

Happy Monday!

We have been talking in group a lot lately about how stress can sabotage us; in our spiritual lives, our emotional lives and our day to day lives, INCLUDING how we eat and WHY we eat.

When I am under a lot of stress and I try to do my devotions, it works one of two ways.  Ideally, when I open my Bible, I find a sense of peace that can only come from God.  Most of the time that works.  Occasionally though, as I start to read, I am so distracted that I can’t even focus on a paragraph, much less a chapter.  (Hmmm… wonder who might be influencing that!)  My spiritual journey may not take the exact track I had planned, but I try to pray it out and see if maybe God has a different plan for my spiritual journey that day.

Have you ever been booking along with your day and then it just falls apart?  You yell at the kids, the husband/wife or the television.   Sometimes, stress will create so much DIStress that you just shut down.  You can’t talk about it and you can’t even function.  Hopefully, you can explain to the family or those around you and have their support.  And that’s only a couple of ways emotional stress can hijack you.

And then there is the day to day/hour to hour thing.  You get up in the morning and immediately hit a dead run.  No time for devotions, no time for breakfast, much less any time to start your day by communicating with your spouse or any one else.  If your morning starts that way, you can pretty well count on the rest of the day going that way too.

All of these things can wreak havoc with, not only all of the things mentioned above, but also your physical health.  If you are experiencing a lot of stress, it is unlikely that you are eating properly, exercising, communicating or even spending the time with God that is critical to everything you do.

The Daniel Plan is based on five essentials.  Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus and last, but definitely not least, Friends.  It is the combination of all five that keep us on track.  Remember to remind yourself that GOD is in control, we need to give him the wheel.  And by the way, “phone a friend” is never outdated!

 Is Stress Damaging Your Health?

Dr. Libby Weaver   Source: Food Matters

We all have moments of stress in our lives.

Our bodies are designed to cope with small bursts of stress. It’s a natural response to a perceived danger that fuels our body with the necessary resources to get ourselves out of that danger and into safety.

But what happens when we feel stressed all the time? I like to call this the “stress express” and too many people these days find themselves trapped on it.

What Is The “Stress Express”?

Stress is ultimately tied to our nervous system – specifically the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) or “fight-or-flight” system. But it also involves our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), the “rest and repair” branch.

When the nervous system perceives that we are under “threat”—which in modern times can be due to caffeine consumption and/or our perception of pressure and urgency—the SNS raises our heart rate, increases our respiratory rate, releases stress hormones (adrenalin and cortisol) and diverts blood away from the digestive tract to our muscles so that we can run away from, or fight, whatever is threatening us.

The SNS and the PNS are designed to balance each other. The PNS slows our heart rate and respiration, and brings blood back to the digestive system so that we can digest our food. It also signals to the body that it can focus on doing all the other important jobs it has, like producing sex hormones and repairing any tissues that have been damaged in our “battle”.

When we live our lives ultimately SNS dominant, we end up on the “stress express” and this creates many problems for us.

How Do We Get Trapped on the “Stress Express”?
With our busy, modern lives, it’s very easy to find ourselves with a one-way ticket on the “stress express”. We spend most waking moments of each day engaged with something—whether it’s managing or supporting our families, working, watching television, worrying we’ve let someone down, or scrolling through social media—we are a society that is undeniably switched on. Some of us have jobs that expect us to be available 24/7. Others may simply believe that they need every extra minute just to get everything done that they need to.

We’re tired and it’s exhausting being “on” all the time—so we use caffeine to perk ourselves up. Caffeine sends a message to the pituitary gland in your brain to have the adrenal glands create stress hormones: adrenalin and/or cortisol. This fires us up. We get to mid-afternoon and crash, so we seek out something sugary or sweet, or more caffeine to get us through. When we get home in the evening we feel wired, so maybe we use alcohol to calm ourselves down. Any one of these elements can be enough to perpetuate a cycle where we are never truly relaxed and calm, and thus we end up on the “stress express”.

What are Some Signs that We are on the “Stress Express”?

You regularly feel stressed or as though you are on high alert

You crave sugars and/or carbohydrates

You struggle to lose weight—no matter what you try

You’re regularly bothered by digestive complaints

You regularly sleep poorly and wake up feeling tired

You feel anxious easily

You struggle to say “no”

If you’re a woman in menstruation years, you experience PMS

You feel like everything is urgent and there aren’t enough hours in the day

You are a worrier or a drama queen (or king)

You love coffee, energy drinks—anything that contains caffeine

You feel that if you don’t do it, it won’t get done

How Do We Get Off The “Stress Express”?
The key to getting ourselves off the “stress express” is to activate our parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). The answer to this could lie solely in giving up caffeine, or, at the very least, cutting back to one coffee per day or switching to green tea, which also contains another substance called “theanine” that helps to buffer the affect of caffeine. It’s also useful to explore your perception of pressure and urgency—check whether you apply the same amount to going through your inbox as you do when you have to suddenly slam your brakes on while driving.

Having a regular sleep cycle where you get to bed before 10:00 pm is another option that can make a world of difference. If you struggle to fall asleep, avoid screens for at least two hours before bed, as the light they emit can disrupt your production of sleep inducing hormones.

You might also like to explore how comfortable you are saying “no”. You are busy with what you say “yes” to. If you’re a people pleaser by nature, fearful of letting others down, then you will find it hard to say no and you may be exhausted from trying to appear stronger than you feel.

Learning to flex our “no” muscle more regularly can help cultivate a greater sense of spaciousness, more calm, better personal energy and a greater level of wellness.

Finding the Courage to Change

Happy Monday!

Can you believe that at the end of this month, one third of the year will be gone.  Wasn’t New Year’s like yesterday?

We have finished another six week DVD session and people are disappearing into the snow blown north, as we speak.    So, what next?

Well, the On and On’rs will go on and on.  Sometimes, we take a summer break to give everyone a chance to get all of the wanderlust out of their systems for another year.  That is yet to be determined.  No matter what, we will support each other, motivate each other and above all, pray for each other!

Sometimes, the day to day life gets tough.  Sometimes, when we are missing that weekly contact, we have to reach deep.  Deep within our souls to find the courage and motivation to continue on in the healthy, inspired way we should.  Unfortunately, because it is a necessity that we eat, it is very easy to fall back in our old habits.  We all have a different journey and that is ok.  What we do need to focus on is our motivation.  What do we want out of this?  If it is just social, that’s ok.  As long as the motivation for the group isn’t compromised.

My motivation is multi purposed.  As many of you know, my genetics in the health area aren’t great.  Number one motivation: PAIN GONE!  I hope to see my grandchildren reach their full potential.  Losing weight would be a plus.  Most of all though, I want to know that I have honored God.

So, what is your motivation?  Do you need to find your courage to do what is best for yourself, your loved ones and for God? God has such a wonderful plan for each of us!  All we have to do is accept it.

Pray Unceasingly!!

The Resurrection of Jesus Changed Everything

Happy Monday and post resurrection day!  He’s alive!

I started to write something healthy, but after resurrection Sunday, I just couldn’t do it.  The meaning of the day just set too heavily on my heart.

Resurrection Sunday is a day of rejoicing!  Jesus is alive!  Just as he said, just as he promised, He was raised from the tomb.  In His resurrection comes the promise of eternal life for each of us.  Have you ever wondered how it would feel if we didn’t have that hope?  We would just live until we died and that  would be the end?  Where is the hope in that?  Where is the joy?

What a price was paid!  It breaks my heart to think of the suffering that Jesus had to bear.  It also breaks my heart to know that, even now, I sometimes take that for granted.  What a sacrifice was made for us!  He loved us so much that He opened up His arms and died for us.

My prayer will be that each of us contemplates on that.  That we all practice that love on everyone we meet.  And if we meet someone who needs to hear about the salvation of Jesus Christ, we share it joyfully!

Pray Unceasingly!!

The Resurrection of Jesus Changed Everything
By Rick Warren

“I am the one who raises the dead and gives them life again. Anyone who believes in me, even though he dies like anyone else, shall live again. He is given eternal life for believing in me and shall never perish” (John 11:25-26 TLB).

The Resurrection of Jesus changed everything. It literally split history into A.D. and B.C. It’s the most important event in human history. And it proves three things.

First, it proves that Jesus is exactly who he claimed to be. He repeatedly said he was the Son of God who came to die for our sins. And he did just that. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is one of the most well-documented events in history. It would stand up in any court of law. In fact, it has many, many times throughout centuries.

The apostle Paul said, “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also” (1 Corinthians 15:3-8 NIV).

Second, the Resurrection proves that Jesus keeps his promises. Jesus told his disciples that he would “be killed and on the third day be raised to life” (Matthew 16:21 NIV). Because Jesus kept that promise, you can trust the other promises in the Word of God. The Bible says, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. . . .  [He] set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come” (2 Corinthians 1:20, 22 NIV).

Third, the Resurrection proves that there is life after death. Because of Jesus Christ’s Resurrection, we have HOPE for the future. And it is a hope that will not disappoint (see Romans 5:5). Jesus said, “I am the one who raises the dead and gives them life again. Anyone who believes in me, even though he dies like anyone else, shall live again. He is given eternal life for believing in me and shall never perish” (John 11:25-26 TLB).

Where else are you going to get a promise like that? Nowhere! Who else can give that to you? No one! If you don’t get it from Jesus, you won’t have it. That is an amazing benefit, and it’s available to you today. What’s the qualification? You must believe.

The Bible says, “This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, ‘It is through faith that a righteous person has life’” (Romans 1:17 NLT). God’s Word also says, “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

The Good News is that the death and Resurrection of Jesus gave us access to God. In other words, we can only get to Heaven by trusting in God through his Son, Jesus Christ. “God says he will accept and acquit us — declare us ‘not guilty’ — if we trust Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, by coming to Christ, no matter who we are or what we have been like” (Romans 3:22 TLB).

7 Habits Harming Your Gut Health

Happy Monday!

Life has been very busy lately.  Maybe now, during this holy week, we all need to slow down, take a few deep breaths and focus on what took place during that week so long ago.

There are many prayer requests, so please pray for all who need healing, strength and comfort.

In the process of trying to stay healthy, one of the most neglected areas is your gut.  There is so much that begins, continues and ends here.  With the flu epidemic, plus all the other illnesses going around, antibiotic use has increased, along with the use of anti-bacterial products.  This is a very informative article and could make a serious difference in your daily and long term health.  It becomes even more important as we age.

Every step we take to improve our gut health will improve our overall health for now and in the future.  These are easy changes that will make a big difference.

My prayer for all of you is that you will be healthy and happy in all you do!

Pray Unceasingly!!

In His light,

Lois

7 Habits Harming Your Gut Health

James Colquhoun – Source:  Food Matters

The gut, our second brain, is now recognized by many health practitioners to be the root cause of disease and where healing starts.

Science has now recognized why gut health is so important, and it’s called the microbiome. The microbiome is filled with beneficial bacteria that have a vital link to health and disease, and can be influenced by your diet and lifestyle. We are 10 times more microorganisms than we are human cells, and the majority of them are found in the microbiome. Here are 7 habits that might be affecting the health of your microbiome and harmful to your gut.

  1. Poor Diet
What and how you eat influences your microbiome’s health. If you eat a diet that is rich in nutrition and easily digestible, you will feel energetic and alive because your microbiome is thriving. If you eat a processed diet containing bad fats and high in sugar, and you eat it in 2 minutes while rushing out the door, you will most likely have poor absorption of the little nutrition in the foods, be acidic, feel tired and sick, and your microbiome will flourish with bad bugs.

Follow a few of these tips in your diet to improve your gut health:

Remove processed foods

Eat an alkalized diet full of greens

Eat live foods such as sprouts, as they contain live enzymes and beneficial bacteria

Limit sugar, as sugar fuels the bad bacteria

Increase your fiber from whole food sources such as beans, vegetables, and gluten-free grains

Remove foods that aggravate the gut (e.g. dairy, gluten, MSG)

Chew your food to improve digestion

  1. Antibiotics and Medications
With our first line of help when we are sick being the local doctor, we are prescribed antibiotics for common illness such as earaches and even viruses without knowing the repercussions. Antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria, as do most pharmaceutical medications. If you take daily medication, or antibiotics more than once a year, you will need to replenish your good bacteria through fermented foods and probiotic supplements.
  2. The Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP)
A daily dose is needed to have the effect.  However, over time, it wreaks havoc on your gut. The OCP depletes your B12, folate and zinc levels, and kills off beneficial bacteria. Now think of 10 years of taking the pill, and how good your gut might be thereafter! A break from the pill, or focusing on a gut-healthy diet, will help support long-term use if you must remain on the pill.
  3. Alcohol
Alcohol kills off the good bacteria in our gut, changes the ecosystem of our digestion, and increases acidity. Alcohol furthermore increases intestinal permeability, meaning foreign agents and partially digested food enter through the gut and create an immune response that leads to inflammation. Intestinal permeability also means less nutrient absorption, thus causing a lack of vital nourishment to the cells in your body.
  4. Obsession with Cleanliness
Have you got a hand sanitizer in your handbag or an antimicrobial hand wash at every sink in the house? Well, the overuse of antibacterial and antimicrobial agents might not actually be doing you good. Over-sanitization causes a lack of exposure to the bugs that help create immunity.
  5. A Diet Low in Fermented Foods
Where do we get our good bacteria? Well, at birth we are exposed to them when we come through the vaginal birth canal, and then again from breast milk. After this time, we need to eat our bacteria in the form of fermented foods. If your diet is lacking yogurt, kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, or miso, you could be missing some of the most important foods for your microbiome to thrive well and most likely need to increase these foods to make sure you are replenishing your vital beneficial bacterial.
  6. Stress
When we stress, blood rushes away from our digestive tract and goes to our vital organs to help fuel us if we need to fight or flee. The digestive response is not needed if we are to fight a tiger, so it partially shuts down. Long term stress means a lack of blood supply to your digestive tract and also a lack of gastric secretions, leading to poor gut health. To combat the effects of stress, try taking a few deep breaths, deep in your belly, to reverse the stress response.

Community is God’s Answer to Defeat

Happy Monday!

After a wonderful service at church yesterday, I was just counting my blessings.  All I had to do was look around and count so many!  So many friends who are like family.

Our monthly carry in dinner followed church service.  Looking around at the newly revamped fellowship hall, I counted all over again!  It looks great, but the real blessing was the number of people who came together to make it happen!  Everything from time and talent to muscles and money and PRAYERS!  All of this and that’s just at church!

What is almost overwhelming at times, is the blessing of community.  Our church community is so special.  It is a family.  Family watches out for each other and takes care of each other.  We pray for each other, a lot!  There are members of our family that, for various reasons, we haven’t seen in a while.  They are still a part of us though and still part of our “family”.

Satan is always on the prowl.  If we remain strong and keep our “family” ties strong, he will have a battle on his hands trying to break through!

The church, The Daniel Plan group, our Bible study group and our Sunday school class are all cords that bind us together.  We are community and will remain strong!

Pray Unceasingly!!

Community is God’s Answer to Defeat

By Rick Warren

“In humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” (Philippians 2:3-4 NIV).

Each one of us needs other people to watch out for us — to defend us, protect us, and help us stay on track. In the book of Philippians, the apostle Paul tells us that we should look out for each other’s interests, not just our own. What a counter cultural verse! In America today, it’s all about me — my needs, my interests, my wants, and my ambitions. But Paul teaches us to look out for others, too.

But did you know you have a personal enemy who wants to defeat you. His name is Satan. He wants to bring problems into your life, ruin your relationships, and hurt you as badly as he can.

Why does he want to hurt you? Because he wants to hurt God but can’t, so he goes after God’s children. On your own, you will never win against Satan. But when you have other people to watch out for you and help you, you can be victorious.

Here’s good advice from Ecclesiastes 4:12: “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves” (NIV).

Does anyone have your back? Is anyone defending you and watching out for your spiritual welfare? You need a community of people who are saying to you: “We’ll be with you when you’re going through the tough times. We’re not going to let you get discouraged or depressed.”

Community is God’s answer to overcoming discouragement and defeat. Ecclesiastes 4:10 says, “If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up” (NIV).

Remember: You can try, but you can’t live life well on your own. We all need other people to walk with us, work with us, and watch out for us.

How to Eat Without Guilt and Enjoy Your Food

Happy Monday!

This week, we are going to talk about (drum roll, please) FOOD.

When I read the title to this article, I couldn’t wait to read it all.  I have felt guilty about what I have eaten for the bigger part of my life.  I think I can actually say, at this point in my life, I am finally beyond that.  I will never go on another diet.  It took a while, but The Daniel Plan has gradually changed my way of thinking.

I follow The Daniel Plan, along with an anti-inflammatory elimination plan that takes away the common foods your body tends to react to.  As long as I follow this, I feel better than I have in years and sleep better than I have in years!  That is a really good feeling!  I am losing some weight doing it too, even though that isn’t the reason I started the elimination plan.

What I am learning is:

#1  We all have different motives for doing what we do.  The only one who can determine those motives is YOU, with the help of God.

#2  There is no “one size fits all” plan.  What works for me may not work for you and vice versa.

#3  You cannot beat yourself into submission by denial, self-criticism or guilt.

#4  You cannot achieve long-term success on your own.  It needs to be a two-party plan at the least, (you and God beside you) and hopefully, a few real friends to share the journey.

#5  Encouragement from those around you is priceless.  Their journey may not be the same, and that’s ok, but their support is what friendship is about.

Put aside judgement of others and pray for the same.  God created each of us uniquely and very special.  Our job is to determine how to be the best stewards of what He has given us.

“May your week be filled with good thoughts, kind people, happy moments and unexpected Miracles.”

Pray Unceasingly!!

Lois

How to Eat Without Guilt and Enjoy Your Food

Rachel Druckenmiller

Every day, we make choices.  And so many of us struggle with our choices around eating.

It’s a challenge to consistently eat a nourishing diet…or to even keep track of what that means amidst the newest diet or health food fads that flood the media.  It’s hard to know exactly what and how we “should” eat.  People often ask me for advice related to these key questions.

Here’s what I’ve learned and found to be most helpful and transformative along my journey of health and healing.

It isn’t about eating “good” foods or “bad” foods.

Nor is it about “cheat” days or “cheat” meals.

And no, we’re not talking about “being on a diet.”

We glorify some foods and villainize others for the sake of “being good” or to have an excuse for those times when we want to “cheat.”

What if we started thinking and talking about food differently?

What if, instead of thinking of food in terms of good/bad, healthy/unhealthy, following the rules/cheating, we began to think of it as real/fake? Living/dead? Nutrient-rich/nutrient-depleting? Anti-inflammatory/inflammatory? Detoxifying/toxic? Healing/harmful?

At this point in my journey, this perspective shift means a commitment to being a “qualitarian” – fueling my body with the freshest, most nourishing, nutrient-rich, delicious food available to me, so that I have the energy and health to do the things I want to do and am called to do with my life. Having this kind of vitality also means being able to spend lots of quality time with my friends and family.

When I eat, I don’t think of the food as “good” or “bad” or ask myself if I’m “cheating.” Those words stir up feelings of guilt and shame, which don’t make us feel particularly good and aren’t the best motivators for lasting changes.

Our body actually processes food differently when we eat it in a state of guilt and shame vs. one of calmness and acceptance. If we’re going to eat it, we might as well enjoy it.

I know that Krause’s dark chocolate caramels aren’t exactly loaded with health-promoting nutrients, but they taste delicious, and sometimes I want one. When I do, I eat it and enjoy it. If I eat it, I own it. I wasn’t “bad.” I didn’t “cheat.”

I simply made a choice.

Eating without guilt is very freeing. It actually means we can enjoy food more.  And food was meant to be enjoyed.  Instead of “being bad” or “cheating,” what if we started asking ourselves questions like these before making food choices?

Is it real? (Hint: If it has 35 ingredients and a third-grader couldn’t pronounce most of them, then it’s not a real, whole food. Michael Pollan has written an awesome book that distinguishes between “real” food vs. what he calls “edible food-like substances.” Following the guidelines in his book provides a helpful starting point for determining what’s real and what’s not.)

Is/was it living? (Hint: The life in food gives us life. If we’re constantly eating highly processed foods created in factories and industrial plants and not including adequate amounts of naturally growing, living, plant-based foods in our diet, then we’re very likely to be missing out on how alive we can feel when we are well nourished.

Is it nutrient-rich? (Hint: High quality, fresh, organic (if possible) foods are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals that help our bodies function at their best, resist and fight disease, heal and stay energized and vibrant. Not only are highly processed and refined foods nutrient-deficient, but they also pull nutrients from our bodies as we process them; they deal a double blow.)

Is it anti-inflammatory? (Hint: Inflammation is one of the main reasons we are getting and staying sick and carrying excess weight that won’t seem to budge. Inflamed tissues hold on to weight and are the breeding ground for disease and sickness. When we eat anti-inflammatory foods, we can reduce inflammation and impact weight and disease risk).

Is it detoxifying? (Hint: Most of the food and drinks in our modern diet are literally toxic to our bodies, causing us to get sick, stay sick, and hold on to weight. Low quality, highly processed, refined, and sugary foods loaded with chemicals like pesticides, hormones, preservatives and antibiotics keep our bodies in a toxic state. Eating foods that naturally detoxify the body helps to keep us well.)

Is it healing? (Hint: If the answer to the previous 5 questions is “no,” then there’s a good chance that what we’re eating/drinking may be harmful to our body and our health. This can vary from person to person. For many people, myself included, dairy products are harmful – their consumption is tied to weight gain, inflammation, ear/nose/throat infections and illnesses, bronchitis, congestion, allergies, skin issues, etc. For others, gluten (the sticky protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and a few other grains) is inflammatory and makes them very ill or keeps them from feeling their best. Curious if you might have a food allergy (we’re not just talking peanuts! Check out this post.)

If we start to shift the ways we think and talk about food, perhaps we can start making some lasting changes around what we’re eating without “dieting” and without guilt.

When foods are no longer “bad” foods or “cheat” foods, it diminishes their allure, and we don’t want to eat them as much. We’re no longer rebelling against ourselves but are supporting ourselves to be well.

Imagine the health, energy, and physical well-being we could have if we focused on eating real, living, nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, healing foods!

The next time you eat, regardless of what it is, remind yourself, “it’s a choice, not a “cheat“…and enjoy it

I encourage myself, all of us, to have a sense of humor about this, lighten up about it. Realize, everyone is dealing with some areas of life where their thinking just doesn’t line up with what they most want or wish they believed. A coach showed me how to reckon with this and talk back to the voice in my head with the voice of my vision and what I really want for my life.  It took courage, but each time I did it, the results were immediate. I wish I could tell you I was done with my journey but I know enough now to know I’m not. The better I get at changing my mind and attracting more of what I want, the bigger I get to dream. I wish the same for you.

The Day God Gave Me More Than I Could Handle

Happy Monday!

This is a little different today.  This was shared last week by a young mother who found it at a time when she desperately needed it.  She was trying to deal with a very sick little girl who has a chronic condition.  Her husband was out of town and trying to get back to her.  She was pretty overwhelmed at that point and I believe God put this before her.  It gave her comfort and restored her hope.

This resonated with me because I have been there.  I have a pretty strong feeling that many of you have been there too.

Are you overwhelmed?  Desperate and feeling you just can’t take anymore?  Do you know someone that is?  If so, please share.

When you are faced with so much that you just can’t stand any longer, fall.  Fall on your knees and let the burden go.  Let it go to the one who CAN handle it.  Surrender it all to our all mighty Savior who has already paid the price for our burdens.

I hope this resonates with you, as it did me.

The Day God Gave Me More Than I Could Handle

What kind of God gives us more than we can handle?

I recently read a blog with a sweet little story that ended with a sweet little quote that we’ve probably all heard (and said) hundreds of times.

“God will never give you more than you can handle!”

And while the article was good and it brought a tear to my eye…I couldn’t stop thinking about that overly used, “go-to” Christian phrase.

“God will never give you more than you can handle!”

“God will NEVER give you more than you can handle!”

During some of the toughest times in my life I’ve been told that God wouldn’t give me more than I could handle.

And I hate to break it to you guys. But we’re wrong. We are all getting it SO wrong.

To the mother whose 14-year-old daughter is fighting for her life in a hospital bed…

To the husband whose wife lost her life in childbirth, leaving him alone with a family to care for…

To the girl whose boyfriend is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head…

To the person reading this whose daily battle is deeper and darker and scarier than anything you’ve ever been through…

The truth is, God is giving you more than you can handle.

When you’re dealt a hand of cards that turns your world upside down, He’s not trying to make you mad.

I promise.  And while you may get mad and want be strong and make it look easy…I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to do that.  You never have to do that.

God doesn’t expect you to be strong or make sense of the mess or step up to save the world.

(He already sent someone to save the world, remember?)

He wants to show you that leaning on Him is the only way you’ll find the strength to keep moving forward.

Will God give you more than you can handle?

Yes.

There will come a day that God will give you more than you can handle.

I can absolutely guarantee it.

Life is hard, it’s scary, it’s lonely, it’s confusing, it’s dark and there will be times that it’s more than you could ever possibly deal with alone.  But you know what?  This is the beautiful thing about it.

God doesn’t expect you to do it alone.

And while it’s way easier said than done, I truly believe that surrendering to God is the key to peace in our darkest hours.

Surrender.

It means trusting God’s timing not knowing when it will come.

It means expecting a miracle not knowing how God will provide it.

It means coming to the feet of Jesus every single day and saying “I trust you.”

Even though it might be hard to believe right now, this is all part of a perfect plan. It may seem like a disaster, but every single event in our life plays a role in a much bigger picture. A big, beautiful, God-designed masterpiece.

Lean on Him.

Seek Him.

Trust His will.

And find comfort in knowing that you aren’t walking down this road alone.

God is walking right beside you and He is ready to carry your load just as soon you make the choice to surrender it to Him.

Let Him handle it.

He’s got this.

I promise.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5-6

FOCUS ON GOD’S LOVE

Happy Monday!

Sometimes, life is so hard to understand.  Sometimes, I don’t even care if I understand.  I just want it to be… right.

I see the suffering and the pain.  I can’t make it go away.  I’m a “doer”.  I want to make it go away.  I don’t understand.

I know I can’t fix all the things I would like to fix.  I know I don’t have to, or even need to understand.

I reread Lamentations today.  I think I may reread Job tomorrow.  But then maybe I will just pray and focus on the God that I trust and love.

We have often talked about where we put our focus in our Daniel Plan meetings.  I have to remember that because where we put our focus will determine what we feel, think and do.  I will focus on God’s love and trust Him in all things.  Thy will be done.

Pray Unceasingly!!

FOCUS ON GOD’S LOVE

The Daniel Plan

(Lamentations 3)

I need to turn my focus from my pain to God’s love. I need to switch my attention from focusing on my problems and my pain and my pressure, my difficulties and I need to turn my focus onto God’s love. And even though I’m mad at God, I need to remind myself how much he loves me because his love isn’t based on what I do or what I say. His love is based on the fact that God is an unconditional loving God. God is love. So, I can’t make God stop loving me. I can complain, he’s not going to stop loving me. I can rile and rail at him but it’s not going to stop him from loving me.

So, the second thing I do after I’ve done this catharsis where I just go, God, I don’t like this. I didn’t want to lose that person. I didn’t want to lose that job. I didn’t want to lose that dream. I didn’t want to lose my health, well, then I turn my focus from my pain to God’s love. In the next verses Jeremiah says this, “The thought of my pain and my homelessness is bitter poison.” Boy, isn’t that the truth. He said, I think of it constantly. And what’s the result, my spirit is depressed.

Now let me stop right there. We’ve talked about this, many times in this series on the invisible war that the battle against yourself, the battle against Satan, the battle against the world, the spiritual enemies that want to tear down your soul always is a mental battle. It’s in your mind.

If you want to change your life you have to change your thoughts. You have to switch your thoughts. You have to change the channel of your mind. And he says, “The thoughts, when I think about my pain and my homelessness,” he goes, “it’s bitter, it’s bitter poison.” And he says, I think of it constantly.

Okay, great, you are thinking of it constantly. How well is it working for you?  He says, My spirit is depressed. Obviously, it isn’t working for him. And I’m telling you this, as long as you are sitting around going, This isn’t fair, This isn’t fair, This isn’t fair, you are going to be depressed. Your bitterness does no good, zero good. It doesn’t make you happier. It won’t change the situation.

So, griping and arguing and complaining and whining is going to do nothing except make you depressed. And he says, The more I think about my how my world’s falling apart, the more I think about how unfair life is. And life isn’t fair because we talked about it last week, the whole world’s broken. The more I do that and I think about how it’s not right I just make myself more depressed. It’s a bitter poison. It’s eating you alive. You are not hurting that other person with your bitterness, you are hurting yourself.

So, he contrasts it. He said, “The thought of my pain is bitter poison.” I think of it constantly. My spirit is depressed. Then he says, Yet — here is the switch — I turn my focus yet hope returns. When does hope return?  Hope returns when I remember this one thing:  What is the one thing he remembers?  The Lord’s unfailing love and mercy still continue. He says, Like as fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise, he says, I can count on God’s love. The Lord is all I have so in him I put my hope. You don’t know God is all you need until God is all you’ve got. And when you finally have lost it all and all you’ve got is God you go, Oh, okay. I’ve lost it all. God’s all I’ve got, but you know what, it’s all I need because God’s going to take care of me.

He says, “I turn my thoughts from my bitterness and I turn my thoughts to how much God loves me” and his mercy to me is new every morning and it’s everlasting and it’s eternal and it won’t stop and he’s never going to stop loving me.

I want you to write this thought down, I always make dumb mistakes when I doubt God’s love. I always make dumb mistakes when I doubt God’s love. Because when I doubt God’s love, I’m going to start thinking that I know better than God and I’m going to start choosing my way to do things rather than God’s way to do things. Now I need to turn my thoughts from my pain to God’s love.

Another example of this is the next verse down in verse 31. Even if I’ve lost everything, I’ve lost my job or I’ve lost my health or I’ve lost my marriage or I lost a baby or I lost something really precious to me, here is what you do, focus not on what I’ve lost but on what is left. Focus not on what’s lost but what’s left. Okay. I lost my job. What do I still have?  I’m still alive. My heart’s still beating. I have my freedom. I’ve got my brain.

Wonderful Counselor

Happy President’s Day Monday!

We are well into the first week of Lent.  I didn’t grow up with Lent, so I guess it doesn’t mean the same to me as it does to someone who has embraced it all of their life.  What it does mean to me though is a time of meditation.  A time spent contemplating what Jesus Christ went through during His final days on earth, His death and His resurrection.

When all is said and done though, I think the really important thing we have to remember is the “why” and the result. He died and then was resurrected to save us.  He is my strength and my guide.  He is my Father and my all and all.

What is He to you?  How do you relate to Him?  Is He the one you turn to?

I pretty well know the story by heart, but at this time of year, it is so real and my heart is almost overcome by the tremendous sacrifice and at the same time, overjoyed at the outcome!  If you ever feel unloved, stop and think about how very loved you are that Jesus gave His life!  For you and for me.

Pray Unceasingly!!

Lois

Wonderful Counselor

The Daniel Plan

He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.     —Isaiah 9:6 NIV

Is he your Wonderful Counselor, the one who guides you in how to live your life?

Is he your Mighty God, the one you turn to for strength?

Is he your Everlasting Father, the head of your family who gives you your sense of identity?

Is he your Prince of Peace, your source of safety and wholeness?

Can you say to him, “Mighty God, here I am. I’m yours. I want to have complete faith in you. Help me to see you for all you are.”

Pastor Rick says “You take the wheel from here, Lord, you call the shots. Be the CEO of my life, become the chairman of the board. I’m putting a sign up that says I am under new management.”  Is Jesus in charge of your life? Is he managing your pursuit of a healthy lifestyle? What would you like to put him in charge of today?

Food for Thought: God is our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. He longs for us to draw near to him in the fullness of who he is.
